So, I have two bikes, a Bfe with pike coil forks and a intense tracer 2 with fox 36 talas forks. I prefer the feel of the pikes, they are more progressive and I think it's down to the coil. So I'd like to change the fox forks for some coil forks, what forks do you biking gods recommend. Tracer has a 11/8 headset, and 20mm front hub...
Everyone's raving about the new pikes, but will they be as good as the old ones? Also the cost of the forks, and changing the headset, and converting the front hub will be ££££
Ideas?
Someone posted a PSA for 2013 Marzocchi 55 RC3 Ti earlier.
I have some of the air spring ones and they are great. Can only imagine the coil ones are amazing.
I've got a set of 2010 36 Vanilla on my 6.6
Picked them up for a great price on PB as most people are looking to go lighter/ bigger wheels. Really nice and plush..
Lyrik is always a good choice- reliable, inexpensive, excellent damping. Not light obviously!
I wouldn't write off air on the strength of your 36s mind, Talas has gone through a load of iterations and most of them aren't very good. A float or air lyrik can work far better.
I was about to post a very similar thread.
I to have a tracer 2 and need some new forks.
I have also seen all the reviews for the new pikes so am leaning towards them.
However they might be a little small for what I want.m
Preferably was looking for 170mm travel that is adjust on the fly down to a climbing friendly height.
20mm axle. (Pike is only 15mm)m
Any fork I am missing?
I have 36 fox vanilla 2012's... they are amazing. swapped from 36 floats and its night and day. immense!
My T2 is with marzoochi 55 TI (spring).
Ok, thanks for the advice, its between the Fox Vans 36 and the Marzoochi 55 TI. any bargains about on these?
Hi, anyone know what the difference between the marzocchi 55 Ti RC3, and the V2 ones are? Apart from the newer ones having 10mm more travel. Been offered some almost new V1s for 340, that's a fair price right?
TALAS stands for Travel Adjust Linear Air Spring, which is why it's linear - more like a coil than an air fork.
Air forks are generally more progressive but most higher end forks have compression adjustment which will allow you to tune in a more progressive feel. (basic physics says that when you compress air the resistance will increase faster than the compression)
Fox TALAS needs the RC2 to work well really or at least some low speed compression.
Chunkymonkey... the V2 supposedly has a better rebound circuit which means the range of adjustment is better. I have the older version and I could never get good low speed damping without the fork choking at high speed stuff. That's not to say it was a bad fork, it was very plush and great at high speed stuff but wallowy for low speed tech and prone to brake dive. I have an Avalanche kit in mine at the moment and it's stunning as it fixes the issues I had, but it gives away 500+g to the Pike fork on a demo bike I have. The Pike is very good... not the equal of the Avy RC3-Ti but damn good; and certainly the best out of the box fork I have tried anyway.
Beware the Rc3-Ti if your big... you need to be the correct weight for the Ti spring, if you need to add air because your a bit chunky the performance is not as good.
New Pike seems to be the best fork currently on the market, although you will need a new headset... or just a lower cup such as a Hope. Anything older is going to be heavier and probably not as good.
messiah - Too late, ive bought it!

I'm 85Kg, is that too heavy? I did think about the pikes, but they are more expensive, and I would need to change the Chris King headset from straight to tapered steerer, and Chris King hub from 20mm to 15mm. this would have added another ~£100 to the price of the pikes...
btw, I need to lose a bit of weight, aiming for 80-82kg, don't think I'm ever going to get much below that!
Congrats, that's the same fork I have except mine is 1.5 steerer. I would say you should be okay at 85kg, I was when I was that weight last year 😳
They are a very plush fork a bit like the old Pike. What you might find is that the fork is much plusher than the rear end of the bike... but faffing with these things is part of the fun 😆
There a few threads on here about servicing those forks. Make sure there is enough oil them as frequently they came without enough.
Enjoy!
