[#12092580]

Looking for some 35mmm / 780mm bars in carbon and 15/20mm rise

Toss up between:-

Renthal Fatties - boring - meh - the obvious choice
Nukeproof v2 - good reviews and reasonably priced
OneUp - pricier but I like the look and the style of them

Am I missing an obvious choice?

In true STW style, I'll appreciate and like all the "I have these ones, so they're the bestest" replies 🙂

I'm also in Aus so don't worry too much about telling me Jeff at the bike shop up the road has xyz on speshaaaaaaaal!

I replaced a broken set of Renthals (my fault for over tightening a clamp, nothing to do with the bar) with the One up and the flex/compliance claim is subtle but real. I’d absolutely buy the One up bars again.

I have a set of Easton Havoc and a set of Whisky bars.

If I was in the market for new carbon bars, I'd be looking at the One-Up.

Enve M7 if you like bars super stiff.
Burgtec carbon DH, no complaints from me, but not particularly light.
Liking Tune Wunderbars at the moment, light, nice shape, minimal branding.

I have the renthals, I think they’re a little too stiff.

BrandX.

I've them on both my bikes and for (currently) £75 not sure anyone else can get close for VFM.

Work well too, not too stiff and a nice shape.

Shimano's PRO Tharsis bars are the lightest.

One up and Nukeproof are generally known to be some of the more compliant options - I've got the Nuke proof V1s in carbon and a set of the alloy V2s with the new shape which are nice - I'll probably upgrade that bike to V2 carbons

I have dodgy wrists and have the One Up, love them. Also find the angles better than Renthal which don't have enough sweep for me

One Up bar is good, only issue is that for my lights have had to rig a system of some rubber bands and Gorilla tape to keep the them from slipping.

Cromag Fubar. By far the comfiest carbon bars I've ever used.

Syntace or OneUp for suppleness (and Syntace come in 12deg sweep too)

Or NP if you're on a budget

Renthal/Hope if you you like your hands being battered.

I like my OneUp's. They replaced a set of Race Face SixC and I can tell they're comfier. And they're nice and stealthy if that's your thing.

I’ve got Oneup also , great if you like a bit of flex/compliance like I do.

I've just recently got a pair of the Nukeproof V2s. Major relief for my knackered wrists after the super-stiff Race Face alloy bars which were on previously. Slightly strange shape takes about half an hour to get used to ...
Highly recommended.

As above, Nukeproof Horizon would certainly be worth a look.

I'm a big fan of my V1 carbon versions.

The Nukeproof bars are currently reduced too.

I'm tempted myself, it is pay day after all!

I really like my V2 Nukeproofs. They're 31.8 not 35mm so not a perfect comparison but they've got nice feel and the shape made sense as soon as I put my hands on the grips.

Renthal, likewise comparing 31.8 with 35mm, they're good too but stiffer than the Nukeproofs and a wee bit cheap looking, especially once the cheesy gold starts to come off.

My brand x carbon bars are a nice shape with plenty of sweep - they have a little bit of flex in them I think. More than my previous alloy bars, but I haven’t tried any other carbon bars to compare with. I liked them enough that both bikes now have them on - and they’re a decent price for carbon.

Pro Tharsis 3Five bars. Got them on my Stumpjumper and a second set is now on order for the Cotic build in a few months.

Really impressed with my nukeproof v2's when I bought them they were actually cheaper than the bx I initially ordered.

I sent the bx back as I thought the finish was poor.

The nukeproof are just great bars and stunning value.

Anyone tried both the OneUp carbon and Spank Spike 35 Vibrocore?

Mainly for avoiding the conundrum after a fall/crash of whether they're still safe to use.

Also in addition to being a bit more expensive themselves, carbons have the extra expenses of a saw guide, carbon hacksaw blade, carbon-safe assembly compound, and low-range torque wrench/bit.

I’ve always used the same guide and hacksaw as I use for aluminium bars and steerers.  I’m aware of the special carbon blades but have no idea what benefit they offer?

No more need for a saw guide than a metal bar, standard blades will cut it fine (*), carbon paste isn't usually necessary (tbf I've used mine more on dropper posts than anything carbon) and while a torque wrench/bit might be a good idea for a lot of people it's not an essential either.

(* people worry about damaging the fibres but it's the absolute tip of the bar, it's not load bearing)

Im a rebel and freehand cut carbon with a high tooth count hacksaw blade and a couple or wraps of electrical tape. As long as you don't muscle through the last bit of the cut you'll be good.
I havent used a saw guide since it vanished from the chalet.
Never used Carbon paste or a torque wrench, but the latter would be useful if you have hands the size of hams.

I used old lock-on collars as a saw guide. Actually, I got some nylon washers to stack in there as well. Perfect cuts every time.

Regarding the extras I thought would be needed with carbon, the context was that I already have a pipe cutter. I've no idea about using a normal hacksaw on carbon or doing without the other bits, I'm sure I'd do fine but I'd probably not want to cut corners.

The potential repeated hit of the cost of a new bar after a fall, just in case, is what I'm thinking more about. I have the odd crash, the odd semi-controlled involuntary dismount, and the slack bike likes to fall over when leant against things.

Sorry for the thread hijack!

not the 35 vibrocore but have used the standard size ones. spank and oneup use a different approach. spank are stiff but have the foam while oneup are bendy. persoanlly I prefer the oneup bars for shape. I cut mine down to 780 using a standard blade. Takes seconds to cut and it was smooth.

Not mentioned yet but the shape of the Salsa Rustler bar is great. Replaced a set of crash damaged Chromag Fubars with them. The Chromag’s were excellent too, wouldn’t have swapped them if I hadn’t took a chunk out of them.

I was looking at the Hope 35 bars as I like the 7degree sweep. The OneUp ones are 8. I tried some 9s and didn’t get on with them.

Will I notice a huge difference between 7 and 8? People recommend OneUp over hope?

The Nukeproof and BX are both reduced at the moment and within a tenner of each other at £70 and £77.
With the same dimensions, and shape I can’t believe they aren’t identical really. Both in house CRC brands. Anyway, I prefer the more subtle BX brand.

Good spot that, yeah they're surely the same bar in a different dress?

BX might be the V1 Nukeproof? Upsweep figure of 6deg vs. 5deg would suggest so.

Got the new HT built up and just chucked on some cheap alloy bars to get a feel of the bike. Actually seems a bit longer than the FS despite a apparent shorter reach figure.

Will give me an idea of what bars to go for. I can instantly tell I need a slightly higher rise though. Probably look at the OneUp ones or Nukeproof V2 ones. Both look great.
