country lanes + hard frost + waning moon + inversion + sunrise = ๐
now i am toasty warm at work listening to everyone moan about the "cold" and what a miserable time of year it is.
Quality mate - mine was much the same - shame it's only 0.8 miles though ๐
Dunc
Jammy bugger.
Stuck in a car because the Mrs says its too cold to be towing the kids to nursery in the trailer.
Might have to ask her if I can put my foot down over this matter.
Yeh I had a great one too but it was very slippy, bike was all over the place at one point on ice but I managed to stay upright.
Yep, up at six o'clock, out on the bike by seven. Twelve and a half miles of woodland singletrack and open common land. Ground was hard and frosty, Lurvely conditions.

today i learnt councils don't grit roads, at all!!!! that ice is slippy, that tarmac is hard and that some drivers are even more stupid than i could possibly believe!
To be fair one driver did ask if i was ok the second time i crashed. I just couldn't believe how fast the boy racer accelarated after my third crash as he got past me. This is after seeing* (*i assume he was looking at the road in front and i was in front of him?) me slide 30ft down the road on my elbows.
Only damage is an elbow that sticks to my desk and the bar tape on the bike.
I may be lucky enough to live with a trial centre within spitting distance but my commute either involves nasty nasty climbs on unclasified roads or a National Speed Limit fast A road all the way into town. What I would give for singletrack to work!! Still trying to find alternate routes but it's limiting!
MrMo I feel your pain as I did the same thing last week as I took my normal detour through Sheffield. Looking ahead for my little jump and not at the floor where it was clearly ice, and I just slid right past it. Had a sticky thigh for a couple of days and now left with a beautiful rainbow on my leg. Learned a valuable lesson but still fell over a further two times on way in but those were super slow speed ๐
Just checked the forecast for the next few toadys and it's not looking good for me, particularly tomorow. And for tonights journey home I can look forward to a 20 mph headwind, heavy sleet and a temp that 'feels like' -6. Roll on 5pm.

Out-of-context quoting can be fun!

has made me even more miserable today. I need a change of life!
This is what I call commute to work!!!

Read about that last week. Only does it once a week though but he still must be knackered on a Friday night. I notice it says he's use the commute to practice for time trials and he really does need the practice - 72 miles in 4 hours is a failry slow pace for someone who races.
If he did it every day all through winter then I might be impressed ๐
72 miles in 4 hours is a fairly slow pace for someone who races.
18mph average for 4 hours at 5am is pretty good going!
#resists the temptation to lecture Gary on the principles of training#
I had 'Billy Elliot' shouted at me this morning waiting at lights in Bath. Took a while, but I assume reference was to a male in 'tights'. Put a smile on my face, great inoffensive one-liner!
Yeh at 5am its not bad, but it's not very good for the journey home. And I was beinh slightly tounge in cheek.
Yep, quality ride into work today - 25 miles to work and back, 2/3rds off road, skirting Dartmoor. Passed by a local lake today and watched the orange spread across the eastern skyline, pine trees silhouetted around me and geese coming in to land, honking as they splashed down in the semi-dark.
Mouthpiece kept freezing up on the camelbak, and I could see the steam pouring off me when I finally got to the roads and stopped at a junction.
GFs first ride into work with me today, she was so hyped about how amazing everything looked, and the growing light revealed just how white everything was, and how long she'd waited to actually start commuting in. I kind of felt spoiled by the fact that I've seen this for weeks now. Note to self: never forget how amazing my part of the world is at 07.00 on a clear winter's morning.
Then it was on to the "urban" part of the ride - kids on their way to school making siren noises at us as we passed (both exposure joysticks set to rapid flashing) and the usual lorry driver w***ers blocking off the bike lane cos they don't want us passing them on the inside whilst they're stuck in a traffic jam. Usual hand signals given to them to pass on my best wishes.
Back to reality, eh?!
Sounds almost perfect CTD, no issues with ice? I've been getting some real "tripod" action of late.
The worrying thing is Gary; there are probabaly road racing mentalists who do that every day, that don't feel the need to willy wave in the press.
I'm sure there are even folks on here who do more than 150 miles per week, just riding to work there On-one "im hard me" singlespeeds!
I'm starting to think my 11 mile commute is a pathetic effort now ๐ฅ
first half was freezing fog, wiping the frost from my glasses every couple of hundred yards should have prepared me for the frosted/iced roads at going up the hill.
took a bit longer than usual as im recovering from a weekend stack
3 days of rain + sub-zero temps last night = lots of ice
Had to get off and push up a couple of hills but it was great fun most of the way!
sofatester I commute between 120 and 200 miles a week on the bike - it's 20 miles each way. I don't do it on a singlespeed though ๐
72 miles in 4 hours is a fairly slow pace for someone who races.
18 mph over 72 miles is really quick mate (even for a racer). Especially knowing you've got to do it again later on. Made even harder by the time of day and lonesome riding. Full respect to the bloke. Rob
18 mph over 72 miles is really quick mate (even for a racer) Honestly it's not, it's okay but it's not 'really quick'.
1st nice ride in of the year - bit of frost but no ice and some beautiful scenery (either an inversion or just low lying fog - same thing?).
Roll on long days!
Watch out Gary, your going to get ice on your willy if you keep on like that!
I'm just saying what I do in answer to your post. It's hardly willy waving.
Let's find out, new post on main forum ๐
