Not only do I suffer by living in one of the flatest parts of the UK but my new house suffers from really bad limescale build-up. Anyone have any experience of having a water softener installed for a fairly standard size 3 bed semi that connects at the mains? Cost, ease of installation, pitfalls, recommended brands? Ta

From personal experience I would not buy a Kenetico 2020c. I did, I thought it was the best of best, it certainly cost enough. Its been nothing but trouble, and half the time I have hard water.

I've not saved up enough to replace it yet, so can't recommend one.

Yeah they sent a flyer through the door the other day, but I've heard they can be troublesome. Anyone else got any suggestions?

Did a lot of research on this a few years ago and eventually bought a Monarch Midi from ebay. It's a bit of a munta but Monarch is a well respected company and you get a long warranty period. Installed it myself over 3 years ago and no problems so far. Suggest you check out salt prices from all the plumbers merchants in your area as prices vary.

and just in case you didn't know already, you don't want to use one if you have a baby in the house or at least don't use that water for the baby - the salt levels will end up a bit high.

Other than that check what regular maintenance you need to do as if you are like me you will never get round to it so the less the better.

I've installed Ecowater softeners in two properties and I'd do it again. There are two basic types, timed recharge and two cylinder jobs that recharge one while the other is working. The imed ones are cheaper and I'v not had a problem. The worst that can happen is that some unsoftened water gets into the system. You're supposed to have an unsotened drinking water tap in the kitchen because of the salt content (important for babies) but it doesn't tast salty and we often drank it anyway.

Life is too short to proofread.
