What socks are good for stopping feet from going completely numb? I bought some M+S Merino wool ones after reading on here that they were great, but they're rubbish. Even two pairs of them doesn't work. And it's not even that cold here, probably -2 at worst.

Want something I can get preferably at Millets as that's the only outdoors shop in town.

I use these, toasty warm, I've never had a problem down well below -2°C

Get some mohair socks from Capricorn
http://www.capricornsocks.co.uk/. Had a few pairs on the go for over a year and grand through sub-zero winter and still going strong.

Got some of these (600 knee high) as they were suggested to me from one of my forestry contractors:

Super toasty and with the terry-knitted construction they feel very good. Wore them walking and biking and they have been great so far.

Not cheap though 🙁

Depends what you're doing. I've just bought some sealskinz walking socks which have a merino wool lining, and have been wearing them with M&S wool socks as an inner and they work fine for outdoor stuff. The seaskinz have the added bonus of windproofing too. I also use Brasher socks which are pretty good; they do a four season sock.

Your boots or shoes are probably too tight. You get the warmth from the airspace so if you stuff your foot into a tight shoe you crush down the airspace, hence cold feet.

I spent 5 hours out in deep snow on Sunday with a pair of Sealskinz and M&S merino socks and my feet were warm.

Extremities Mountain Toesters. You'll need quite spacious shoes to fit them in - if you squish thick socks too much you lose all the insulating air, thus defeating the object.

I bought some cheapo Karrimor merino socks on the off chance(the £5 ones on the link below) , I've been wearing them to walk to work in some reasonably deep snow this week and my feet have been toasty warm (but my Gore-tex walking boots probably helped a lot too).

I'd recommend them though (there's some thicker/warmer ones for £6 too)

Cheers, I might give them a go, we got a sports direct 🙂

epicyclo my shoes aren't too tight afaik, they maybe feel a bit loose if anything. Possibly the shoes aren't thick enough though, they're only normal Vans rather than anything made for cold weather!
