I normally have 43 european(my trailcross) and went for 44 with those and they don't feel like clown shoes and are comfortable.
They can be a challenge to get on though

For me : A vaude size 44 feels a bit smaller than a 44 in a 5 ten, but not much.

Just checked mine. 44.5 which is what I used to buy 5-10s in, so I'd say close to normal sizing.

Fraction small and they seem to have narrowed up a bit

If I measure my feet in a shop they size up as a 9 or 43 in metric. Ihave yet to fit into a 43 MTB shoe of any brand. I swear by my VauDes and after 3 years have bought another pair. Both have been size 44 and fit like a glove. There is enough adjustment in the lacing system to account for thin summer or thick winter socks.

8 in normal shoes
8.5 in Five Ten Gore-tex
9 in the Vaudes

We've done this a few times before btw, if you want more input search for those threads.
