So here's my dilemma...

I'm looking to upgrade my 2004 Vanilla R125. They are great forks but i just want to up the travel a bit and perhaps go thru axle. So I have been looking at a few alternatives. First up is a 2010 Vanilla RL. I like the Fox especiall as my last are still going strong. The vans are such a 'plug and play' fork but recently some Pike deals have caught my eye as well as the new Sektor.

I don't have any experience with RS (been a Fox and Manitou rider) and would like some opinions please.

I've read conflicting reports on the Sektors. Some say they replace the pike other say they don't come close but then both the Pikes and Vans are discontinued does this mean they are using older tech...

Yeah, so i've got a headful of nothing and I guess the only way i can make a decision is from riders. I've got a budget but if it's the right fork that may change. Over to you, go for it..

Marzocchi 44 RC3.

2010 ones are 140mm, 2011 ones are 150/130mm.

Coil, super-plush, damping better than my Pikes, light, 3 year warranty with no servicing. Got 2 sets myself, loving them both!

Awesome review on the Sektors Buzz, must have missed that one, food for thought.

Hmm Zocchis and Maguras, that's just adding more into the mix but they are pushing the budget (max £450) unless I can find any offers... 🙂

Running coil Sektors, on a Dialled PA, and very happy with them so far. They have seen Cannock, Peak and general XC duties and been a great fit and forget fork.

They might not be as super smooth etc as a more expensive fork with better internals, but they do me fine. If I had any complaints, it's I wish they were not only available in white 😉

Unlike my 2010 Air Revs which had been back to Fishers 2x in the same period.

Yeah I think I'll like to keep to a coil fork.

Again it's less to think about 😉

I'd suggest some Pikes or another Vanilla.

I've had a pair of Pikes for 3 of 4 years (went for them for the bolt through and U-turn over the Vans which were only 9mm drop out at the time). I'd recommend them overall but this year they developed a clicking sound when compressed hard. After some useful advice on the forum here I took them apart and fixed the problem - just a rubber piece around the spring that needed moving up. Apart from that they really have been very reliable.

Now that you can get Vans with the QR15 I'd get them over the Pikes as they are the lightest 32mm coil fork around and their lockout is more handy than the U-turn. My pikes are the 426 coil u-turn and weigh at least a pound more than a Van.

The Marzocchi 44 RC3 is apparently very good from all I've read but a lot of other Marzocchi models in the last few years have been crap compared to what they used to produce. They used to be incredibly reliable partly because of the open oil bath and lots of metal parts rather than plastic ones, only penalty was the weight. Apparently their whole 2011 range is meant to be a return to this previous quality.

After much deliberation I finally went for the Sektor Solo Air. Basically the owner reviews, Sektor heritage (Pike and Rev's love child) the thru axle and the cost swang it for me over the Vans. It will be interesting to see what difference it will make but I'll post here to give you guys progress. 🙂
