And how , reality hit hard when on a ride today one of my local loops from home .

for various reasons riding was nearly non existant in 2009 self employed and work dried up, What you say loads of time to ride.
Yes I agree but no did not ride , vegetated.

now the weather has picked up and I have got a riding holiday looming in 4 weeks with some mates. I have been slowly getting back into doing some riding and today did a 26 mile loop I used to do an a regular basis which was a doddle but today it was tough I made it round but had to walk the last half mile up hill home totally bolloxed

I quess the question is can I regain some of the fitness I used to enjoy in 2008 when this 26 mile ride was easy in the next 4 weeks or am I going to suffer badly

Yes...do riding for the next week - nothing too heavy and then some more the next week and ramp it up 3rd week...ride light on 4th week and you'll be reet for the holiday.

God I hope so!! My own body is a bit messed up this year and nowhere near as good as it was this time last year. Hopefully, I can start to do something about it starting over the next few weeks...

I have found though, that even getting out regularly for only a few weeks can make a noticeable difference.

Light is still fab, BTW!

What he said. If you've been fit in the past you should get back there or close in a month.

Every other day, give your muscles time to repair between rides.

This time last year i was unemployed and riding nearly every day. I was mega fit but that declined after i started a new job but 10 months on i'm unemployed again and have been riding almost daily for 4 weeks or so.

Fitness is back to where it was a year ago and i've lost nearly half a stone in that time. The dry and dusty trails have been hard to ignore! Ride every day and just gradually increase distance etc and you'll be fine.

got bad news for you friend; you were fit in 2008, did bugger all in 2009, 2010 booked a holiday - it's going to hurt, accept it; fitness will return in 2012 with the olympics...
