And how much play in the pedal bearings is acceptable?

Sorry to be an arse, but it depends what you accept!!
I have a pair of M515 pedals that I've had for 10 years without any kind of maintenance. The left one the bearings are clearly done in, and it wobbles about, but it's still secure on the spindle, and still spins fine, so I've kept it on. The right doesn't even have that.

No problem it was a vague question, maybe I should of asked will it fall of the axle with a loose bearing.
