Hi Folks,
Looking for a bit of tyre advice. I just bought a secondhand 2016 SF6, it has mustang elite rims and bonty x1 2.0 tyres. Tyres have virtually no tread and was looking to replace.
There doesn’t seem to be much 29r options out there in the smaller widths and was worried that most of the 2.3tyres would roll and squirm on the narrow internal width rims.
Any recommendations, it will be mostly muddy Xc trails in the winter!
Mrs_oab had a SF6 in XS flavour.
We ran 2.2ish tyres, normally Nobby Nic's through the summer, occasionally Ralph on the back. Winter we went with Hans Dampf on front/NN rear and I think we also had Purgatory/Ground Control 2.25 in there once, until she complained it was like riding on velcro.
No squirming, they're not that narrow unless you're trying to run dafty low pressures.
From memory the rear clearance wasn't huge for anything bigger.
It came with a 2.2 up front if I recall?
I got some Conti X-Kings I think. They're good but I don't think they're black chilli.
Sadly I've not really tested them properly, just trail centres.
If it helps, I think this idea of squirm is a bit of a myth, I rode 2.4" on 15mm internal rims at 30psi back in the day...
I used a 2.4 MK2 and 2.3 on bontrager at 850 rims, from memory they were 19 mm internal. They worked pretty well.
Ended up going for the Spesh, purgatory grid up front and the ground control on the back. Both supposed to be 2.30, they look like rubber bands compared to my Hightower’s 2.4s
Plenty of clearance, let’s hope the perform well tonight.

They are good tyres, grippy if a tad less supple than some.
