Hi everyone, my name is Ben Illingworth and I’m a master’s student currently studying Transport Planning at the Institute of Transport Studies at the University of Leeds. For my dissertation I am focusing on the travel patterns of people who participate in various forms of leisure cycling including Mountain Biking, Road cycling and BMX. At, present because of the inaccessibility of many locations, leisure cycling can be very car dependent.

The link below is a survey that I hope that cyclists across the country will respond to and tell me their travel patterns and participation in cycling. Then I can understand the environmental impact of these travel patterns and propose various changes to make leisure cycling more accessible by all modes (e.g. improved public transport to cycling destinations).

It would be of great help if anyone could take the time to complete the survey because the results could be very useful in improving leisure cycling for everyone. The survey takes 10-15 mins.

Thank You!!!! 🙂

Doing it now.
Question 7 - no chance! I'd be there all day trying to work that out.

Actually, no sorry. I got bored with trying to figure all the average numbers you were asking for. Far to complicated and time consuming, I gave up on about page 4. Honest feedback, I think you need to try a different approach.

Ben, yes I've just done it, but seriously - 10-15 minutes? A lot longer than that, far too complicated, and to be honest I only persevered to see how long it took. As tthew said, I think you need to re-think it to get any sensible amounts of replies - again, honest feedback - good luck with the research. Only filling it in, as my son has just finished his degree, and when I did mine we had to do a survey which turned out to be a PITA to get responses to!

In addition to the above feedback, as someone who nearly always rides on public roads and rides from the house (occasionally I take the train and ride back, or I’ll drive if I take the kids out) most of the questions are pretty hard to answer. I think you’ll get a self-selected set of only people who drive to trail centres and have lots of time on their hands to waste filling in things on the internet.

Though to be fair, if that’s what you want then you’re in the right place 😀

I don't understand question 3 - does 'location' put me off leisure cycling?

Question 7 - I'd struggle to even name all the places I've driven too in the past year. A bit like asking which shops have you been in. Likewise for the question about ever going on cycling holidays.

Generally - why does the option 'never' come and go? It's in question 10 but not 11.
