Anyone else suffer with this from time to time?

Had to cut my ride short this morning as it felt like someone was stabbing me just under my left shoulder blade at least twice a minute. Such a pronounced twinge that it was actually taking my breath away and making me groan out loud.

I probably get this every six months or so - I usually just wake up with it one morning and it takes 4-5 days to dissipate.

I’m on the voltarol, ralgex and tiger balm as well as some ibuprofen tablets.

I had a fall at work just over 10 years ago and made a mess of my back, as time went on, I became weaker on the right side of my back, after scans and x-rays, my physio reckoned, I'd snapped 6 of the ligaments that were attached to the Facet Joints on my back.  Despite, Tramadol, Naproxen and a TENS machine, I still get cramps every day, in my back, that cause me horrendous pain and makes me twist and lean over to the right. It can last for a matter of minutes or several hours and I can tell you, it is really really debilitating.

You have my sympathy and understanding.

Alan.

Sounds very bad!

No. Don't have that. Just the "twice a year" lumbago thing. Hits me always in the cold time of the year. Think it's really connected to temperature / wind / crap like this.

"Stabbing" thing: luckily not really... sudden pain in muscles only when I train hard and don't drink enough of that isostar stuff. As long as I drink this no pain in the muscles. Hate to pay for this isostar stuff - but can't bike long and hard without this.

But in your case, when you pinch the nerve: different. Maybe some shoulder protection will help.

More likely muscle spasm I would have thought.  Can be very painful.  Careful with mixing voltarol and ibuprofen - same family of drugs and will eat your stomach

So, a new day and more pain.

Similar to yesterday, now with a background level of constant pain.

Not a happy bunny. I may have to book an appointment with a physio at this rate.

I get regular shoulder pain.. spasms and cramping that can last for days and make me thoroughly miserable.. Just such a relentless monotonous pain. But then I trapped a nerve in my shoulder on holiday a couple of years ago and suddenly understood a whole new world of agony. Like a really bad toothache but in my arm, constant, unwavering pain from my collarbone to my finger tips (my index finger was completely numb for six weeks)

I was given IV tramadol, voltarol (had to discontinue the voltarol though) and then  oxycodone.. I would try to get valium if your GP isnt too anti.

My other shoulder froze by the time the nerve pain had eased off due to all the cramping and weird contortions.

Trapped the same nerve at work last month and was about ready to top myself after my previous experience, but luckily it eased off after just 3 days instead of 6 weeks this time.

Definitely see a physio.

At least it is taking the focus away from my shoulder (innocuous ‘phew got away with that’ crash at Hopton last year) and my knee (innocuous stepping down from bike onto a loose rock that rolled my knee outwards nearly two years ago).

I think it will have to be physio this time.

Are you certain you can take Voltarol and Ibuprofen at the same time?

Have something similar there is a certain point around my left shoulder blade that sometimes feels like someone is tearing the muscle/nerve at a single point. This leads to spasms around my left upper back and the area next to the spine always feels bruised. No idea how it happened but it has done it for years and years and at worst the pain is excruciating and it’s hard to breath.

Scans etc reveal nothing and no amount of exercise or physio has really made any difference. The physio says there is an area of my back in permanent spasm, sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t hurt at all.

You have my sympathy.

I have had various similar problems over the years. Go and see a doctor and a physio

i suffered from spasms in the lower back years ago and some stretching exercises made a hude difference. But, I had to do them every hour!

more recently a crash left me with a shoulder injury and no amount of exercise would improve it. I was having NHS physio and paying private for more including acupuncture. It helped but only a little.

Eventually  I asked about steroid injections (something that I had previously from the NHS)

the nhs physio said yes it probably would help but they were discouraged from offering it due to costs

as I asked it was different.

I had one a few days later and that began a real recovery process.

Its still a bit problematic but regular yoga, stretching and cycling seem to keep things in order.

I’m not suggesting this will be appropriate for your condition but keep asking, and don’t just accept that it’s how things will be.

Start with a doctor and a physio. Tell them your active and it’s  effecting your quality of life.
