Thanks for all of the help so far folks!
I've now looked at and test driven a couple of vans and I'm fairly certain I'll go for the Custom Double cab. I'm going to buy a year old van I reckon. I've narrowed it down to two. One is a SWB automatic model with barn doors. The other is a LWB manual model with tailgate. Both are 2019. This will be my daily driver, family, holiday and bike van. For those with experience, which of these vans would you choose for this remit?
Cheers,
Matt
The red one. 😁
You'll have to decide that for yourself dude, you have a better idea on the amount of space you need inside, the amount of space you have to park it, if you prefer an manual or automatic etc. etc.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. I ended up with a 2019 SWB Custom Doublecab with 6000 miles on it. Very happy so far. Cheers!
Needs some pics
Does anyone have the LWB Doublecab? If so, how many bikes (modern 29ers) could you fit in with wheels on?
I always expected I’d have to remove front wheels to get multiple bikes in.
@a11y Can you not fit multiple bikes in WITHOUT taking their front wheels off?
I'm considering getting a LWB Doublecab and was hoping to fit 3 pretty long enduro bikes in, wheels on - with their back wheels up against the bulkhead secured in a BikeStow and their font wheel/bars at the rear door end, angled at 45° so they'd fit?
A bit like how it's shown in the left-hand image below (but with 3 bikes rather than 4):

From your experience would that work do you think?
@robingrant, multiple bikes with wheels on isn't something I've tried, but I've found measurements I took while I was planning for my L2 Double-Cab:
Max load length behind rear seats at floor level: 1,944mm.
Usable load length at midpoint on bulkhead: 1872mm.
Maximum loadspace width: 1775mm (110mm wider than Vivaro – 1662mm).
Loadspace between wheelarches: 1390mm (120mm wider than Vivaro – 1268mm).
Max load area length at floor level is slightly more than at midpoint as the bulkhead on the double-cab isn't completely vertical.
So if your bike with wheel at 45deg is shorter than 1872mm it should be possible...
Tracey? Where did you get those bike shrouds?
I managed to track them down after seeing them in the Specialized demo van. Have had them for about five years.
Originally bought them to put on the bikes in the camper garage so that they didn't get damaged in transit but when we bought the Tourneo they also get used in that. Bought a couple more at the back end of last year as I needed them a bit longer for the new Enduros we got.
The guy who made them is called Ian
Best to ring him and have a chat. They are made of the same padded material as our old windsurfer bags. They are bomb proof.
Thanks so much for the info.
This is well worth a watch for bike storage:
