bloody A###holes, my bike was locked in a hospital secure(ish) bike park, a good 20 foot climb down from the spiked railings to get in yet they managed it in broad day light a a busy hospital main entrance, thankfully my bike was decently locked so they left the frame and wheels!but the gits took my forks, stem, handlebars, shifter brakes even the bloody headset..what can one do to protect against this short of thing bar wiring my bike up to the eclectic mains to give them a shock
That must have taken a while to dissasemble, therefore I'd have a word with the security manager as they may have been negligent in their duties in not spotting / stopping this
crikey! I saw a similar thing in london. Walked past a Kona locked up with some decent Marzocchis on, walked back after lunch - bike still there, forks missing!
Theres devices for locking you forks on and i have locking skewers, but theres really naff all you can do other than run a cheapo bike for locking up.
how the heck did they take the headset??
Bloody nora. The only way round that would be to remove the top cap so a wire lock could run through the forks steerer/headset/frame.
Nope star nut would be in the way!
well they must have used a screw driver for the headset, will be moving my bike to one of the other 2 secure sheds that have the roof covered, going to order the pinhead stuff for my wheels and forks on my commuting bike just to be sure, tempted to buy them for all my bikes but that would cost me an arm and a leg for 8 or so bikes, cheers for the heads up on that product
i've got those pinhead things, work quite well although you can't get quite as much tension in them as a normal skewer. I've only got them on the wheels/seatpost, though i guess if the wheels locked up they can't really take the forks either
They would just take the front fork with the wheel and probably the front brake as well and than work on it at home.
My mate had his forks, wheel and brake nicked from his bike locked in a communal staircase in a block of 4 flats. Went to the post office, came back after an hour and saw 1/3 of the bike missing.
Thing that pi55es me off even more is that even if You secure Your bike properly, use decent locks, that they won't manage to nick the more expensive bits they just give the bike a kicking, cut the tyres, jump on the wheels etc. Saw loads of bikes with L bent wheels. Nicking the parts is quite common and pretty scary as the opportunity thief's worked out how to use allen keys and what`s what on bikes 🙁 I recently saw a road bike with missing handlebars with the STI's missing as well. 2 bolts, cable cutters and You're away with something that can fetch £50-100.
I would speak with the security as well. You're bike can be securely locked but if the security guy will not be bothered than all the security will not help.
The only way to not have Your bike nicked is to probably ride a bike from a skip, no brakes, no gears, most things bent and covered in poo so that they will be afraid to get their tracsuits dirty 😉
glue gun, fill the bolt heads with hot glue leave to dry.
to remove reheat glue and clean glue out.
All my London mates use this technique.
stops random punters with a set of hex keys removing stuff.
Bad luck, hope security cameras give a clue.
Got a 'free' DIRT100 product review with some stuff i bought today. The price of some of that stuff is unreal, taking the most extreme example BOS DH forks £1,895. An orange 5 was one of the cheapest bikes in there.
'Budget' bike £1400..I know DIRT are interested in the high end stuff, but general bike stuff is pretty expensive.
Bikes, for some scrotes are the new car stereo..easy to nick sell or break, mostly untraceable and the police not really interested or able to do anything about it.
they should chop fingers of thieves like they do i the middle east rather than just giving out cautions and suspended sentences. Then thieves may think twice..wishful thinking
I know its contentious but someone must be buying the stuff for them to think its worth pinching in the first place.

EBAY, stick up a half decent add and no one, even STW would be any the wiser whether your parts are stollen or not.
Exactly.
indeed, but It's not going to stop me usig ebay or the classifides, just on the off chance something is stolen.
Could you just put a lock between the fork crown and the fork arch to stop forks from being stolen? I can't imagine somebody going to the toruble of taking the forks appart to steal them, unless they cost 1000 pounds and the thief is determined I guess.
If an item is on eBay
ALL IN BADLYSPELD CAPITOLS SELING FOR MY FREND I BOUGHT IT OFF A GUY WHO TUNED THE FRAEM ROXSHOX FOX FORKS DOWNHILL XC SARACEN
then I wouldn't bid on it. If it was written by someone who clearly had in idea what it actually was and which gave a bit of provenance, I'd consider it more likely to be legit...
Theres a german company called pitlock www.pitlock.com/ that do a full range of locking doodads for forks, wheels, pretty much everything...
Bad luck by the way...My commute bike has good shit on it but with no decals...all black too...its not noticed so much....
ordered the pit lock head set lock. Could not lock the forks as they where carbon rigid so no brace to lock it with. Well todays commute was on a twenty year old single speed road bike covered go black hammer rite. Not a nice comfy ride but it will do for the moment untill i get a key for a different bike shed. Cheers do the opinions guys
