Thinking of buying my first full susser, any suggestions on what would be a good choice? Specialized Pitch Pro gets good reviews, is 160mm too much bounce? All suggestions welcome?

Giant are great value for money, several depending on what travel you want (trance, reign etc). +1 also for the new Heckler or Superlight pricing (depending on what travel you want) you should get a good build.

Many will say 160mm is too much for the UK, but if it pedals well and youre not paying an unnecessary weight penalty its better to have and not need than need and not have. I have a 160mm Nomad and ride it all day perfectly happily in the less-than-gnarl chilterns, but it also flew in the Colorado Rockies last week 😉

I've had both 4" and 6" FS's, I'd suggest buying something at the 'shorter' end.

Does also depend on where you ride, but I tested an Orange ST4, and that rode really good.

A bit like you can go down the shops in a Ferrari...

if you can comfortably do so, and when you regularly take the same ferrari to the nurburgring, yes.

30 mile loop in chilterns this spring.

If you're looking for something with conventional XC sort-of angles then I'd second Giant as being worth a look.

My friend got a 2009 Trance X1 reduced to under £1,800 with Crossmax wheels - it's very fast and very light.

I felt totally over-biked on a Nomad. 03 Superlighht felt too flexy and Heckler feels just right.

I also found the nomad too much for me. I rode it everywhere from Spain to Laggan, but never felt I was capable of pushing as hard as the bike was. 160mm may well be too much for a first dip into full sus. I kept the nomad when I got my current fuel ex9 and have never felt the need to ride it since. The fuel climbs well, descends as fast as I want to go and when weighed on the same scales, is 6lb ligther than nomad. You can pick up a fuel ex8 for around £2000 which I think was What MTBs bike of the year.

I built up my 5 Spot using an an ebay'd all new parts, frame & fork, Chris King hubbed wheels, Juicy 7 brakes, XT and XTR, Thomson post etc for under £1500.

Shop around and you could build a bargain bike.

Excellent suggestions, many thanks for all the input. Now off to do some hunting for deals and offers. Taking a Ferrari to the shops sounds fun, but where would one put the shopping?

Trek EX8! Wicked bike and if you can find a 2009 version you may have £500 to play with to buy some kit.

Orange ST4 frames in 16 and 20" sizes, new on ebay at £799 or best offer. If you could get one of those for £750, or maybe even £700, and one of the sizes fits, that could be a great deal. Easily build a nice one up for under £2k from that starting point.
