How important are these?
I've just got a new stem (sunline from Crc) for my stumpjumper and the stack height is smaller than the stem it replaced.
There's now maybe a 1-2mm gap between the stem cap and the spacer. Is this advisable or do I need to get a bigger spacer and file it down?
Cheers
You need to have the spacer protruding above the steerer tube otherwise you can't preload the head set bearings. So you need to buy a spacer at least as tall as the difference between your old and new stem otherwise your headset won't be properly set up.
Ok, cheers.
So will a 10mm spacer be too big seeing as the current spacer is a mm or 2 short of the top of the steerer or doesn't it matter?
The stack height NEEDS to be above the top of the fork steerer so that the top cap clamps some pre-load on to the headset.
edit: as said above, sorry
10mm is a bit much for a 2mm gap. Get a smaller one, I might have some spare or you bike shop will.
Either buy some nice ones or speak to your LBS and they should be able to sort you out (its polite to buy something though!) Unless you are in Leeds, in which case I have loads you could try.
Cheers all
So looking at the picture I've got too much of a gap?
No, the gap is fine, aslong as the bolt is long enough to reach the SFN.
Use your common sense, all the top cap does is preload the headset bearings.
Picture looks fine to me !
