Hi. I'm looking to build a hardtail in steel, using a Rohloff hub.
Are there any suggestions please? I'm not keen on adjustable drop outs and would prefer an EBB. I think Thorn do something that might fit the bill, but I'd prefer something along the lines of a Cotic Soul!!! Something with 120 or so forks would be ideal.
As I don't have any bits, I'd ideally like to buy something complete and retro fit the Rohloff, unless there are other suggestions such as donor bikes that could be used to build up the frame of choice?
If you want an EBB then a Charge Duster 8 frame would fit the bill. Tange Prestige.
What does the EBB give you so that you can used fixed fittings at the hub? How does that work?
/EDIT - Found the answer: An eccentric is a cylindrical plug that fits into an enlarged bottom bracket shell. The plug is machined to accept a typical bottom bracket, but offset from the center of the plug, so that by rotating the plug, the location of the bottom bracket (and hence the chain tension) may be adjusted (fore and aft is desired, up and down is unavoidable and usually inconsequential). Once properly adjusted the plug is then fixed in place by a pair of set screws.
edit: ignore me.
I'd be having a look at 18Bikes Custom

also as a complete bike...
or an on-one inbred slot dropout?
something with a long left hand drop out so you can have a nice easy fitting rear wheel with click box 😀
im putting my rohloff thats in a thorn raven enduro atm into a ragley td1 with a lynskey long L/h drop out when they land and SS right hand.
Dialed bikes love/hate or Cotic simple.
Cheers everyone, there's some great suggestions there. The idea of a custom from 18 bikes is very tempting, but probably out of my price range (those Rohloff's are expensive!!!).
Trail_rat - what do you think of the Raven?
I ran a Rohloff on a Sanderson Soloist with EBB and now on an Evil Sovereign with its HVS drop outs. Both steel and nice to ride, Soloist is up for sale, to xc for my liking.
Preferably not one of these

i have bought and paid for a raven - its in aberdeen - im in equatorial guinea - give me 5 weeks and ill tell you how it is - im building it all onto a Ragley TD-1 i just bought the bike for the hub - the frame will be my girlfriends commuting bike as its too small for me !
Pipedream's R853 Sirius frame which recently won a WTB grouptest has Paragon sliding dropout I believe which should allow you to fit Rohlof specific dropouts.
Try an Orange P7 they have drop outs for the Rohloff.
To get a cheaper Rohloff scan the adverts on eBay or on this site. They pop up quite regularly and you will save £100s
Orange P7 uses adjustable drop outs (mine is a 2007 P7 + Rohloff). TBH I think the set up is a bit messy albeit mechanically sound. The idea of a great frame with EBB has piqued my interest and could be the next build project 🙂
yeah thats what i did andrewBF - bought a used rohloff from a mate in a complete bike - made sense to me - if it goes tits up and rohloff dont want to know my insurance policy that i pay lots a year for will be made use of !
I've got a Rohloff in a Dialled bikes Love Hate frame. It's great but not sure they make them any more?
Rohloff is about to go back to Germany for it's second visit as it's failed again. Yes - they do fail and you can't fix them yourselves. Wouldn't buy again.

I've got i Rohloff in a Thorn Raven Enduro. Nice frame and so easy with it being designed for the hub. Avoid anything with track-end dropouts. I tried a Simple to start with but it was a 15 minute job to get a puncture fixed as wheel removal was such a faff. If you don't mind using a tensioner, you can use any frame.

I've got a Rohloff in a Dialled bikes Love Hate frame. It's great but not sure they make them any more?Still got Love/Hates in stock, but these are the last ones, and not ordering any more after that.
Deals to be had if anyone is interested.
Lots of people have Rohloff'd and Alfine'd them.
When I looked at the Thorn Raven it's tyre clearance wasn't very good, but they may have changed the design since then.
Thorn now have the Sterling frame ( an updated version of the old Enduro ) Better tyre clearances & better cable routing... lighter than the old 853 frame too I believe. Properly designed frame for the Rohloff hub - no bodging required !
the sterling frame certainly wouldn't be lighter than the 853 and also it's not built for any abuse ......read the literature !!
Rustychain - Have a 19" Dialled Bikes Love/Hate with EBB for sale if interested. Email in profile
