[#3222775]

Having great trouble getting a Maxxis Advantage to inflate on Mavic XM719 rim using a new Stans tubeless rim strip.

This rim strip is different to the old one which it replaces; it has a recessed ridge in the centre that the tyre when deflated just drops back down into. (I can only get it inflated with a CO2 cartridge without the valve core in).

I have tried to fit another rim tape underneath to get a better seal, but this doesn’t seem to have worked either.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Is it a used Advantage? The first time I set mine up tubeless they were fine but then changed them for something else. When I came to refit them it was as though the bead had stretched and they were really loose. Had to use C02 to inflate them.

Try the pikey inflator. I had problems with a mavic rim and a scwhalbe tyre. Worked with the pikey inflator

Cheers for the replies!

The advantage is "used", although this is the first time I have had to take it off the rim and only then because the valve came off the old Stans rim strip.

Have done things in a different order, ie, put in sealant, inflate with CO2 put figure over valve then screw in core. Seems to have worked, we shall see!

Have tried the pikey inflator, i think i need some tubing with a larger internal diameter (I’m just using tube off the track pump?) because even with 100psi it won’t inflate a tyre like the CO2 does.

Hopefully I won’t be walking home today...

100psi in a cola bottle 😯

I've never needed more than about 40. You taken the core out of the valve you attach the tube to at the bottle end?

have tried to fit another rim tape underneath to get a better seal,

Sticky insulation tape - couple of layers, gives a tighter fit.

pikey inflator - http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/ghetto-tubeless-inflator-total-cost-9p
Get on it asap - I was really astounded by it.

i use a less pikey, but equally handy inflator - another wheel.

1. find an inner tube with a removable valve core (or just break the core out of a tube) and put it on a spare wheel with a spare tyre;
2. pump up the spare tyre with a track pump;
3. use molegrips to pinch the track pump tube;
4. unscrew the track pump hose from the pump end (mine is a joe blow, and this is easy);
5. plug the now bare end of hose onto the valve (with core removed) of the tyre you're trying to inflate;
6. remove the molegrips;
7. admire your inflated tyre!

Thats ^ exactly what I have been doing, just dosnt deliver the air quick enough no matter what the pressure!

Perhaps its because im using a blackburn pump...

if you are using an inner tube as your reservoir, have you definitely removed/destroyed the valve core, and made sure there is none of it left to obstruct the air flow?

for a stubborn tyre, the two things i do in addition to the above are:

- seat the tyre using an inner tube and leave it, then only unseat one bead when I swap back to using a stans valve (not sure if this is applicable to you since you're using rim strips - i've got yellow tape and a separate valve).

- almost neat fairy liquid brushed around the bead *immediately* before releasing the air from the compressor reservoir.

Ah missed the bit about you using a inner tube in a tyre, im just using the valve from an old tube, without the core, attached to a coke bottle.

The almost neat fairy liquid sounds like a plan next time, iv always used fairly watered down stuff...
