If I buy a set of wheels with these rims do I need to use proper tubeless tyres or can I use normal tyres with sealant as you do ghetto?

The whole point of any Stan's rim is that you can convert normal tyres or run UST. However, the offical advice is that if you run UST tyres, you can use the yellow tape. If you run converted normal tyres, just the unique Flow rim strim (not the conventional rim strip).

I've tried to be clever and use normal exception series ADvantage tyres with yellow tape and I've had a few events because of it, so I'm going to switch to UST tyres. From personal experience, I believe the above advice to be sound. Feel free to learn from my mistakes.

Onza, I've run normal tyres on and off on Flows without a rimstrip for about 12 months with no incident to date. I've just done the same with an advantage. - Care to elaborate on your 'events'. I'm guessing release of the bead and sudden pressure loss?

I'm willing to take the blame for these events myself. I'm not running normal advnatage tyres but the extra light exception series ones. On a hardtail, in the peaks, under a 200 lbs rider. having said that, I'm impressed with what they have taken in terms of a beating.

The first one was a little hop over a stream when climbing from Edale to Hollins Cross. I landed a little over to one side. I'm not sure if i nicked the sidewall and lossed pressure or lost pressure and nicked the sidewall running on it while trying to stop. That was on the rear. The second was a GT on the climb. Just nicked the tread on the front bouncing the front off a little rock for a change of direction. Just a bit too big for it to seal. Took a bit of an over the front (slow speed) on sunday and as the bike came down under its own weight, it took the bead off and let go with a bang.

The tyres are a reasonably loose fit on the rim so I cans ee that a rim strip would have made a difference. So would having a tyre with a stronger sidewall. I was well aware of the chance I was taking but thought I'd give it a try. Didn't pay off too well and lesson leared. I'm still sold on Tubeless and Stans kit. I just now know not to take the micky with tyres. Either UST tyres or something with a stronger sidewall.

Cool, pretty much what I thought. Thanks.

I'm 200lbs too. FWIW, I'd decided to exclude the exception tyres from my experiments already!
