St Andrews area riding ?

[#12840857]

following on from my successful post on riding near Bamburgh a few weeks back..

We are off to a cottage on the outskirts of St Andrews late July, for a week - a place we have been loads before but never with bike. So options are road, gravel or MTB, I'm suspecting gravel probs best option - routes, there is the coastal way stuff, but I know little about it.

Any suggestions for 2-3 hr loops from just east of the town ?

I wanted to give this a whirl a couple of weekends ago but woke up to wind and rain (and hangover) so bailed.

I can't guarantee it's ALL rideable, but there's a lot of sneaky singletrack in there which I know is good, and I researched it as thoroughly as I could. Intended for a gravel bike (start and end points based on where we were staying, you might need to adapt a little).

The area of coastal route just South of St Andrews is probably best avoided on any bike - it looks like Mr Monk has taken that into consideration in his route.

Not sure if I'm teaching a grandma to suck eggs here but Tentsmuir forest is a great place to pootle around on a bike. A gravel or XC bike probably best.

Yeah, the bits I haven't personally ridden, Rusty Rides Gravel did a wee video on. Think there's a brief sandy section that might not go but very short.

I did an impromptu route from Leuchars, finished with an awesome sandy singletrack sprint through Tentsmuir.

Some great stuff, very mixed, good fun if you have the time to explore any wee offshoots you see.

The pilgrim trail starts at St Andrews. Not a loop but you could just pedal out and turn round when you feel like it.

You can get about as far as the St Andrews Bay course but after that there's a fair section of hike-a-bike as far as I can tell. I've done loads of times from East Sands up past the caravan site and then as far as I can go. There's a particularly nice/techy set of rock steps on the way.

Arrived yesterday afternoon, lovely Sunday morning jaunt up the paths and gravel through Tentsmuir to Tayport and back, apart from the crazy Labrador that ran into my back wheel, thankfully I was almost stopped at the time !
