[#11838635]

Looking to upgrade a work colleagues 2016 Cannondale Trail 1 (3x10) to 1x11 SRAM NX, or maybe Shimano 1x11. The NX groupset is best value.

Not in Stock I know, but

Is this direct mount meaning the mounting point is further rearward than conventional mount?
Do I need to buy a "goat link" sort of thing?

I notice that Shimano 11 speed XT and SLX has an additional top link for conventional mount that can be removed for direct mount. The SRAM NX has no such thing.

I did ask the same question 2 years (approx) ago when I got stuck with an NX build on a Bossnut but I can't find the forum post and see the answers from that.

SRAM have never used the direct mount 'standard' for rear mechs.  All of their rear mechs are the convential mount.  In the link you posted the only reference I could see to direct mount was in reference to the chainring which simply means that it fits directly to the crank with a lockring to hold it in place.
