well sometime, this has made my day and is my next frame.
Thanks for the email. I am in the process of working on a 29er as we
now have US and German distribution, both countries which are mad for
the clown wheels, so this will make a 29er a viable proposition. It
will be pretty true to the idea of the Soul, where the Soul works with
100mm (racey), 120mm (nice), 140mm (rock flattening) forks, read
80-100-120 for a 29er version. It's currently slated for release in
late 2011, as we aren't even at prototype stage yet.Cheers,
Cy

Yep - heard this from them a few weeks ago, but didn't mention it as wasn't sure if it was for general release - great news!! They didin't seem to keen on doing a ss version just yet though, which was disappointing.
choices choices.............29r soul or 29r 853 pace?? 8)
mad for the clown wheels
whereas the uk is mostly 'sceptical about clown wheels'
Soul all the way! Though prob. like a steel Paradox!?!
def soul. prob cheaper than a pace.
That is great news.
Want one now!
But that Pace is lovely too and that will be out before Xmas.
Decisions.
i might get one of each............... 😉 not
I saw a brand new Cotic Soul t'other day. The alignment was 'interesting'
to be honest........either of these 2 frames will have to be pretty good to make a singular owner want one.
the singular swift is a awesome frame.
Well id welcome a slightly slacker ha and the option of letting the rebas out to 120. My Niner has a nice light, comphy rear end which i hope the souls big brother would have also.
are there any long travel 29ers. Like do it ALL bikes?
Mythic banshee paradox is the only 120mm hardtail that springs to mind. Short stays also I think.
chumbe hx2 is good with 130mm forks.
On one ti 29er LT is on the way ( overdue?). Love my niner too but fancy 120mm travel and a slacker HA, this soul sounds ace.
Canfield Yelli Screamy - shortest chainstays so far, good for up to 120mm forks- and if you took to si at Progressive available over here.
Swifts are lovely : http://www.singularcycles.com/swift.html : for rigid or "racey" forks
Better keep hold of those 120mm forks I have then! 🙂
So trail riders are catered for with the soul
Xc riders are catered for with the soul
Agressive trail/free ride/big lads are catered for with the Bfe
Now tall riders are catered for with a Soul 29er
Women - still not catered for
Come on Cy the Soul is a classic design surely there is a market for a womens 14 inch version even if it's only a limited edition/small number release just to test the water.
There are so many women on the trails these day to be able to cater for 5 foot 3 and smaller.
Now tall riders are catered for with a Soul 29er
Don't need to be tall to ride a 29er 😀
Several hundred per yearSo trail riders are catered for with the soul
Couple of hundred per yearXc riders are catered for with the soda
Several hundred per yearAgressive trail/free ride/big lads are catered for with the Bfe
Only due to distribution is large 29er markets opening the possibility of several hundred sales or more per yearNow tall riders are catered for with a Soul 29er
Women - still not catered for
Number of sales? Less 30 per year for my type of product I'd guess, at the very most. It's not that I'm willfully ignoring people, it's just that even I need a certain volume to make the design/lab testing/certification/stock control worthwhile, because a 14" Soul due to it's size would need a completely different tubeset to the other sizes.
I did 10 XL Soul frames once, and sold off 7 of them after 2 years because they weren't selling. You get me 50 orders for 14" Souls, I'll make you some.
I've seen some fairly petite ladies on small Souls and Sodas.
Down to about 5ft 3in! 😉
Sorry for overly grumpy post. Been audited by HMRC this afternoon. All good, but a bit stressful.
Just make sure you do a ss version cy - large part of the 29er market, certainly in the US.
No probs Cy, I do understand but I have my girlfriend constantly asking why your not making one.
Thought that you might be able to do a limited run (like your xl frames) to try it out, as I thought you'd easily be able to sell 10.
Would it really need different tube dimensions? I know you could lighten off the tubes due to the lighter weight riders, but that choice a choice rather than necessaity, as the soul is plenty light enough already with that steel zing in it's current form??
Good luck btw with the HMRC
It'd need different seat tube, top tube and down tube due to the centre thin sections being too long to leave enough thicker walls at the ends. These are pretty much custom from Reynolds, so you have minimum orders there. Plus, we're not in the halcyon days of a designer being left to do as he saw fit. With the change in tubing, it'd need prototyping and re-certifying to the CEN regs, which would either bump the price up massively to cover those costs, or you need lots of people buying them.
XS BFe is lovely, and still lighter than most FS frames.....
Clink - until I've sorted out the geometry I don't know what the product plan will look like. It'll be geared first because that's what I ride and I'll be riding one of the prototypes.
I saw a brand new Cotic Soul t'other day. The alignment was 'interesting'
In what way 'interesting'?!
well, tough day for you(i know all about audits...) good day for us, thanks. be very interested in the geo specs when you can let us know.
Oh, nice news Cy, look forward to seeing it!
Though a Swift does also ride pretty well with a 120mm fork IMO, just that it's really designed with an 80-100mm fork in mind.
I am sure the swift is great, came 'this' close to buying one, but ended up with a chumba HX2 currently running on 120s.
Bloody marvellous. Had a brilliAnt run out on Sunday, and just confirmed what a total blast that frame is. Popping off stuff, riding berms, skittering through rocky bits, just bloody marvellous. Even let's you get the power down on the way back up without any flexing.
Kev
Ah, so that's that then, Northwind finally gives in and buys a 29er in late 2011. It's nice to have advance warning of these things
well its been said here already but i was looking at a new steel hard tail last year. Suddenly hit me that none of the uk brands except for on one did a bike enough. In the end i went fs. Lucky trek are on a big enough scale to do the extreme's of the size ranges
that's what I ride and I'll be riding one of the prototypes.
i'll risk my own safety and volunteer to be a guinea pig too Cy
no email yet 🙁
ive been offered but the medium is in germany, cys will be to big. darn.
My Scandal is nice with 120mm forks, but I'd be more than happy to test a Cotic too 😉
I had an XL Soul. Didn't realise they were so rare! I'd have asked for more when I sold it!
Sadly, I never got on with it. I went through a phase of failing to find a bike I really liked, Soul, Wanga, Scandal....none of them really worked for me. In the end I found the Swift and have never looked back. Had I not got a Swift I'd probably have given a Cotic 29er a bash.
stil no email 🙁
Only took me 5 years of convincing you to buy a 29er slowjo but at least you have a bike that doesn't look like a 5 bar gate.... 😆
Well at least I listened in the end! 🙂
Slight hijack. If I currently ride a 20" framed 26er and I was looking at a 29er what size would be equivalent?
i.e. how does a 20" Inbred 26er compare to either a 19" or 21" 29er and if a Cotic 26er comes up small for me would I be looking at a bigger 29er
Ta
I'm not sure, it is usually XL in everything for me!
I ride 19" 26ers and 29ers if that helps.
I would expect a 19" Soul to fit the same in either 26 or 29 versions as seat tube and top tube will be about the same length.
