[#12856680]

Been meaning to do it for a while, weather looks to be changing after tomorrow and have a window, so going up on my own.

Did a thread a little while back and got loads of good info.....

Going against advice slightly, gonna start at Fairholmes do an out and back, maybe some stuff down the east side on my return and even a quick Lockerbrook to finish.

What I didn't get from the previous thread was a definitive way to do the Langsett end - clockwise or anti? People seemed to have different views

I may go into Langsett for cake if that makes a difference.

So, at the split (North America is it?) right or left and regale with tales of why your choice is betterer....

Thanks

I normally do right at the fork, down to North America, then left, then left again to get back onto Cut Gate to return to Slippery Stones/Ladybower

Flip a coin when you get there, they're both good. Either way, completing the run down to the river is good fun if you've got the legs to turn around and plod back up again straight away.

I've only done it once, but went anticlockwise, think I made the right choice.

Probably anticlockwise,  but it doesn't really matter.

just to be contrary, if i was coming from cut gate direction, i'd deff go clockwise - so left hand / western track down and then back up the right hand / eastern track. the've done a lot of work on the eastern track over the past few years (which to be fair it needed) but it now makes it much better as a climb than a descent these days imho.

as mentioned above, if taking the left hand / western track, if you've got the time i'd carry on past the turning back and descend all the way to the river / edge of the reservoir, it's a great flat out blast with a bit of tech at the end. however depending on what time of day your doing it and the weather it can be super popular with people going for a stroll. at the end of the descent, cross over the river and turn right back along langsett bank to loop back round (adds a bit of climbing though)

This. Had been avoiding the eastern bit since people ( Tracey?) said theyd been doing work on it.
But tried it in descent a fortnight ago and it was ok.

Tell us whether you managed to clean the climb back up...

Thats what I've done more often than left at the fork (but not done it for a few years since I moved away)...

Well i'd say definitely clockwise. From Ladybower end stay left at the fork.

So there you go. No consensus.

Either is great, really.

I rode it last weekend and went right down North America, mainly because going left is quite similar to the singletrack before the fork. I did turn left through the gate and back up for the final fast descent down to the river though.

I made the mistake of taking my wife and 12 year old up from the Langset end (not North America) last Saturday evening while it was quiet. Turns out that its a lot steeper and looser to pedal up than I remembered so I had a mutiny on my hands after 2.5 miles!

I made the mistake of agreeing to take my wife for a walk from Langsett up North America then down the rocky bit to the river the day before she gave birth. We got some very disapproving looks as I pushed her up the other side towards the road. Much the same looks as she tackled Cavedale a month earlier but was unable to lift her legs high enough because her belly got in the way... Both times her idea, both times I got told off for laughing. We've taken pictures of her and the boy every year against the background of the spotty café, yes we're massive embarrassing parents.

Oh and I'd go down North America then turn left, along and go down again towards the river then after food come back up NA.

Did the left turn. Pint and some chips at the Wagon and Horses, then heading back

Tow rope is what you need. Did it from Derwent with my 13 year old son and the missus a while back. Told him it was 25km but there was no parking available so it ended up being over 40km. We were all a tad tired 🙂

Enjoyed that, would be a bit of a slog on a leg powered bike from my perspective though

As for which way to go, having ridden up North America, I feel I definitely did it the right way - especially as the left gave the continuation down to the stream before going round the res to langsett
