My front mech Isn't returning any ideas for a good way to clean it up so the spring can start doing its thing again, or has anybody else had this problem develop and realized the mech is goosed.

It shifts up ok with the gear levers which are new as the old ones popped, probably because the mech was so gunked up. Oh and before anybody says anything I don't clean the bike often enough its used everyday for commuting.

TAA

Tooth brush, Juice lubes Gnarl, even might be worth taking of the mech and cleaning it.
It must be really bad to stop going down, it also be good to check/clean/lube your Cables and your shifter as they can get dirty as well.

Also worth lubeing the mech pins etc.

Rob new cables and shifter. I will take the mech off again this evening and give it a soak in degreaser than agitate it with a tooth brush and see if that gets the thing moving.

is it routed correctly ? Surely you are pullling it out is against the spring so it must move but then not return to rest on release-downshift- if this is the case something must be catching it or trapping it open,
is the new shifter working - ie does the cable go slack but mech does not move when you shift down? if slack then the vcable works - perhaps try this disconnected from mech?
Cable stays tight - cable issue if the shifter works
cable slack - mech issue

Junkyard it is defiantly a Mech issue no problems moving the chain up the chainrings, it is fairly hardwork on the shifter end though. but there is no initial movement down the chain rings, the cable always goes slack and a nudge from the heal will drop the mech down. Defo no problems with the cables or the shifter.

I have just got back in the house after fixing the exact same problem on a Deore mech. Cleaning and lubing got it going again. Take it off and marvel how the spring cannot combat the sheer amount of crud embedded in the mech! Grit from the roads in my case.
