Building up a bike for LMTTM Jnr.
The frame is a dinky 14'' Kona from a few years ago.
The headset that came out was a crappy steel cupped semi integrated(?) FSA job with loose cage bearings in 1 1/8'' flavour.
The internal diameter of the HT is 43.84mm top and bottom so I'm guessing that this is a 44mm HT capable of taking a tapered steered if necessary?
I only want 1 1/8'' so taking something like this should do:
I really need the stack height to be as minimal as possible.
Bloody standards.
All looks good to me. That'll give 1 1/8 straight steerer and minimum stack. Hope do one too if you want to spend more money.
This is the spec given for the new Surly bikes:
Head Tube
Ø34mm
Steerer Tube
Ø28.6mm (1-1/8")
Crown Race
Ø30mm (1-1/8")
Stock Headset Upper (S.H.I.S.)
EC34/28.6
Stock Headset Lower (S.H.I.S.)
EC34/30
What does that even mean?!? Will the usual, regular 1 1/8 inch headsets that I've been using since forever still fit? I've got a lovely old Chris King that I've been saving for a new build....
Have a look on the Hope website.
They have lots of charts and diagrams explaining all the combinations and parts.
I used it to explain the Cane Creek headset I needed.
^^ Yeah, that Hope site/diagrams are very handy even if not buying Hope.
Friggin complex these days!

I'd start a new thread mate... and for goodness sakes don't take my word on this but I THINK a normal 1 1/8 does fit that.
I'm going to be proven wrong though I just know it!😆
If you've measured 43.84 then it's ZS44 top n bottom, simples. Change to EC44 bottom when you get tapered forks in the future.

Yes, traditional 1 1/8th headset.
