James, the Minimus is the 240g 800-fill vest, the ultra is the 150g 900-fill stripped down version with only a half zip.

If you have the Minimus, what sort of size will it squeeze down to?

Cheers Anthony

Right then what am I doing wrong.

i've just made myself a beer can stove with top and side jets.

Lights up Ok, after a short while I can see flames coming out of the jets.
So far so good.

But when I stick my Ti mug on it burns for about 20 to 30 seconds then goes out?

I'm using meths from a DIY store. Is that right?

Stu your jet holes area bit on the big side. Think pin hole size rather than knitting needle 😉

Also tend to find with 2 sets of jets the top ones will light up first, side ones should follow along later. Putting your mug straight on top will often put the top jets out and bring the side jets in earlier ... I'm thinking your mug's putting the top jets out but the side jets aren't chiming in due to the size (massive pressure loss through the top jets). Nowt wrong with your fuel, any meths'll do.

Drink more ale and do it again.

Right then I best get drinking. 😆

I'll try with smaller holes and just in the side to start with.

Or do you need the top holes to light the side holes?

If you're planning on sticking your mug straight on top then I wouldn't bother with top jets. I'd put 8 holes in, about 10mm down from the top ... and I'd be using a drawing pin to put 'em in with too 😉

Just tried again with pin holes and now it won't even light from the jets. 😕

Stu ... you have got some feed holes at the base of your inner wall have you? When the things lit, try warming the outside of the stove with a lighter and see if that starts it going.

Sometimes it can take 3-4 minutes for the things to start blooming.

I found with the double wall design like yours tha. You had to have to let the meths heat up for about 30 sec before the jets started and you could put anything on top. Also let the jet burn for a little while before plonking the pan on top. Make sure you hole are drilled cleanly too your look pretty rough as well as big.

@TheBrick you are right about allowing the meths to warm up at first I had a good number of frustrations with the "pop" stove going out all the time.

all this talk of meths stoves got me thinking what does everyone use to transport the meths?

Sigg fuel bottle
Hip flask 😯
35mm camera case (minimalist)
other??

and how much would you carry for a 3 day/2 night trip such as WRT?

For an over-nighter I've bought a airline shampoo bottle from supper drug. 75 - 100 ml ish I think.

Longer than that I use a small squeeze top drinks bottle like this

or if I need more or less a full bottle I've also used a small bike water bottle to carry weeks worth (used about 2/3, two meals a day + cups of tea). Mounted under down tube in separate cage.

All of these containers have a nice easy controllable no spill method of pouring which for an idiot like me is important, especially if shaking.

Not saying these are the best methods, but they worked for me, I'm careful where and how I pack my meths.

Meths in a fruit shoot bottle. Can't see that going completely and catastrophically wrong when you get home ❗

The kids don't have fruit shoots at home as they are the "devils saliva" according to the wife so I'd probably have to get one specifically and then it would go into my locked cupboard in the garage where all my poisons go!!

Probably no worse to drink than a fruit shoot anyway

I don't have kids but the version of the bottle I use is clear (corner shop copy drink) and on any non clear container I tape big toxic labels on. Plus I store with all other chemicals in a safe place e.t.c.

Can you use other pots/pans on that Caldera stove or just the one that comes with it?

Have to say i made a pop can stove using the instructions on the wrt blog and it works fine. I used a nail to make the holes and although I put them in the top I put them quite far down, stuck a camp kettle directly on top and it brewed up a treat.

the link I put up if you go to the following pages they list loads of different types but rather pricey I'd have a crack at making one like IanB.

Caldera Cones tend to be specific to certain pan/ stove configurations.

I'll post up more details on my home made Caldera Clone when I've made one in aluminium.

Fuel bottles - for safety both at home and in use out on a bivi, I use one of the trangia fuel bottles in the 300ml size. The spring loaded valve does make it very easy to dribble meths into my stove without it going all over the place. http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/product372.asp?PageID=110

As Ian mentions Caldera Cones are specific to the pot they are designed for and they don't come come with a pot in the standard kit, you use your own. Some are interchangable though, the Alpkit mug fits the Vargo Ti-lite kit for example.

Has anyone used any cuben fibre for tarp duties?

Pockets not deep enough for Cuben fibre ... but my experiments with plastic, string and pebbles are coming on nicely 😉

Valleydaddy, Cuben fibre ... very light and strong (for its weight) but very difficult to work with as it doesn't take kindly to been sewn.

is it pulling the needles through that's the problem?

As I maybe able to help 😉

As and when I perfect my tarp design, I'll probably try one in cuben fibre. Cuben tape is reported very strong for joining seams as the fabric tends to tear along the line of stitches. As Stu says, it isn't cheap:

so what fabric are you using at the moment Ian?

Do you take a seperate groundsheet as well or was it because we had an abundance of tarps before Christmas?

Thought a sheet of lightweight plastic maybe useful to keep feet dry on edges of bivvy bag??

I didn't use a ground sheet on the bivi the other week, but tbh having one wouldn't have made much difference. My current tarp fabric is some 2.2oz fabric that costs about a quarter of cuben fibre. I do have some 1.1oz silnylon waiting in the wings though 😉

I've told you ... plastic, string and pebbles, it's gonna be a winner 😀

Alpkit tarps, I believe flatfish has a nice new one. I'm sure he'll be along to tell you about it in a minute.
