[#3665581]

I just had a fantastic ride in Sutton Park on my new BFe. The first couple of rides were with a 90mm stem I was a bit stretched out and it left the handling a little sluggish and ok but not great on the downs. So I put my 65mm stem on it that to be honest is a bit ugly and way too chunky for a steel frame. But my god did it change the handling it was so much more willing and twitchy, in a good way, a lot more fun on the downs. And strangely it seemed to climb better with the forks set at 140 than the 90mm did with them at the same height.

Short stems rock and I'm going to be keeping my ugly chunky but brilliant Straitline wedge stem on my little blue bike.

Im running my Blue Pig with a 90mm stem and find it slightly slow handling and myself abit stretched out. Just ordered a 70mm thomson and hoping it'll speed up the steering a fair bit

I've been riding in sutton park for 30 years and have yet to find a significant 'down'... sandy banks doesn't count ๐Ÿ˜‰ I do like the little dirt jumps though.

I run a 65mm stem on my 456 Sum Season handles great, I would be way over stretched on and 18" frame with a 90mm one.

@ passtherizla

I never said there were significant downs but there are a few fun ones with a couple of little jumps. I cant knock Sutton Park as its only a 5 min ride from my house. I wouldnt even class the sand dunes as a down its way too wide, goo fun trying to descend as slow as possible tho, and the drop used to be good before the lip got eroded.

When do you usually ride, I cant recall ever seeing somebody on a 456SS.

I was only messing dude, I Learnt to ride a bike in that park love the place, know it like the back of my hand, I like the four oaks side, going up the hill from town gate way, then left through the trees via the dirt jumps for a lap good section in the middle too, where there are some sneaky muddy sections with a few more man made jumps in the trees, I'm sure you know where i mean, it comes out by a bench by one of the pools.

I have a white meta55 too that I sometimes ride... I only ride there in the summer really, living over chelmsley wood its dark by the time i get in from work, Tuesday and Friday evenings from about 6 we meet at the carpark by the flying fields.

I used to live on western road by wylde green train station.

I think I know where you mean when you say come out by the bench, is this by the boathouse restaurant, the pool with the island?

I live over in Four Oaks by the Crown pub and try to get out most Thursdays and a couple of other times a week. One of the best times to get out at the moment is after the kids have gone to bed on a Sunday so I avoid watching dancing on ice. Let me know if you fancy it.

Thursdays is geriatric skateclub up in digbeth, and Sundays I ride at Cannock, will be there tomorrow about 8. black civic type r with a santa cruz sticker on the back.

But, no there is another good track that comes out there by the boathouse though, it goes from flying fields way go down the big hill through the gate into the woods do a left and stay left go past some recently felled trees, and there is a clearing with about 500 metres of muddy singletrack and log jumps through a hole in the holly. think it may be powells pool that its comes out by used to have a lido...

Hmm not quite sure where you mean. Are your group rides on a Tuesday fast ones or medium fat boy sort of pace? If the latter would you mind if I tag along maybe you could show me a couple of new lines. My mail is in my profile.

Thats cool. If you fancy going over any time sooner I have a spare light that you could borrow. Most of my riding is done in the dark.

50mm Renthal with 710 bars on my BFe - personally I think the BFe handles best at around 120-130mm.

If you've sufficient top tube length to spare then a short stem is an ace idea. I've never gone super-short though, my xc bike is a healthy 80mm, my hardtail is 70mm and my AM bike is 65mm...again, top marks to Straitline for the blue wedge stem which compliments the blue ano elsewhere on my bike.
