OK so, I am probably after 38, 26 again. What should I get and where should I buy if from? Web searches seem to come up with little of real use so what is STW wisdom?

probably easier to buy a crankset from Rose and then sell the arms and BB.
edit: rose only have 40-28. £113 though.

Just bought replacement 38/26 xt rings from actionsports for around £50 for the pair posted. Next time I will be getting the cheaper slx rings but they are not available at the current time 😡
