Anyone tried this? I know it shouldn't work but just wondered if anyone had managed to make it work!
Not really keen to faff about with travel agents and the like.

Pretty sure it wont work without travel agents. I use the agents and it works pretty well. Its the best way for all round use, imo, without going to disks.

Any time I've seen a bike with it it was pretty rubbish, but if you are keen give it a go. Or buy canti's or discs.

Needn't be that bad but will be spongey and have little rim clearance (ooh-er)
use short-arm mini-v's, they have the same cable pull as a caliper brake.
road sti pulls a lot less cable than the ideal for v brakes.
you could set it up, and it will work,
BUT,
you will have a brake with LOADS of power and virtually no feel.
also, you will have to adjust the cable regularly to compensate for slight amounts of wear.
if you sprint at all you will notice the pads rubbing as your wheels flex.
to sum up, you COULD do it, but you dont want to.
my 2p worth.
It's crap - basically did the same when v-brakes came out and it was just pointless - you set the pads up really close to the rims and you get very spongy brakes that may or may not have decent power pedending on how stiff your forks are and the clearance between the stis and the bars.
mini-vs or travel agents I'm afraid.
I dont understand why travel agents are 'a load of faff' took me 5 minutes to set mine up both times Ive done it (2nd time was to insert crosstop levers)
Works perfectly and as powerful as they used to be on the mounatin bike with XT levers
(I have Sora STI units, XTR V Brakes with travel agents)

V's and travel agents fitted. I managed to find some 1.5mm brake cable which made the whole process an awful lot easiier, not ridden yet but they feel positive.
