[Closed] Shimano Campag compatibility

Hi there, think i have done something stupid, so can anyone help me out. This road bike lark is way more complicated!

I bought a set of Campagnolo Khamsin wheels, which I want to put on my Gioant OCR 2. At the minute it is running Shimano Tiagra 9 speed groupset. I know my cassette doesnt fit on the campagnolo freehub so I was going to buy a campagnolo cassette and then run my shimano groupset.

However after talking to some unhelpful bike shops (naming no names!) I was told that there is no compatibility whatsoever and you would be lucky to get more than 2 or 3 useable gears out of it. They said the spacing is different. I figure how much space is there to fiddle about with, surely the differences are so minimal (seeing as each of the 9 cogs need equal spacing) that i would just have to change the upper an lower limiter screws rather than throwing all my shimano stuff away.

I hope they were trying to dupe me out of money, because I can feel my bank balance taking a hit already!

Thanks for any help you can give

have 9 speed campag sti's with shimano deore rear mech over either a shimano or campag cassette on my cross bike. No probs here. spacing is different, but in the order of .003mm or something stupidly small.

The spacing between cogs in different - think 9 campy cogs/spacers is actually wider than the Shimano equivalent. If you want to see if you could live with it, give the adjuster on your mtb rear mech a couple of turns and see how long before you go mad with the grating of cogs just slightly off from the chain....

Its a small difference but enough on such a delicate setup to be annoying at the least.

Having said that I've run a Shimano cassette on an otherwise Campy road bike for a while before I went the whole hog - the low gear would slip a bit and I'd always have a tiny (maybe imaginary) feeling the other cogs just weren't meshing properly. There are various tweaks you can do - can't remember the websites.

Go to a proper bike shop - I'd suggest Condor and ask them about getting a shimano spline freehub for your wheels.

there are places that do shimano spaced cassettes to fit campag hubs.

Might be easier to find someone with the same problem in reverse and swap wheels, though?

Somehow I doubt you'll get a Shimano freehub for a set of Campag wheels! I have the same wheels on my Pompino and although cheap, they seem to put up with a good lot of abuse!

One thing that may be possible, Campag cassettes come as a set of individual cogs and spacers, so if you can find the spacing for a Shimano cassette, I would imagine it would be possible to change the Campag spacing to suit...

Other than that, someone in the US makes a widget that allows you to mate Campag and Shimano, but the name escapes me at the moment...

I know for a fact that Campag Neutron, Eurus and Shamal Ultra wheelsets can be supplied with Shimano spline freehubs.

A lot of Campag wheels are now available with Shimano freehubs, Campag (eventually) realised it was the only option for people who wanted to run a proper groupset but had some strange reason why they wanted to buy overpriced Campag wheels. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Campag/Shimano compatibility is a difficult one, sometimes things work near perfectly, other times they won't even come close, it varies between groupsets and components. As a general rule though it'll never work as well as a full Shimano or a full Campag set-up.
Personally I'd sell the wheels and buy a set of Mavics or Shimanos and just have done with it. Or go and buy a Shimano-splined Campag freehub and swap them over.

if you can get a shimano freehub to solve any issues easily - other wise get a campag cassette and swap the spacers inside for shimano spacers (you might have to do a little filing on the splines to fit) - best for second look at micarms thread reply
