I'm fitting a Shimano Alfine hub gear on to a cyclo cross bike (Genesis Day One, horizontal drop out), but the problem I keep coming up against is finding a suitable shifter. I have looked at the Versa STI's but I don't think they'll have enough pull to operate my v-brakes. I have also considered putting the trigger shifter on the tops of the bars, which I think will fit with a shim, but this is hardly an elegant solution. Any ideas out there? 🙂

to use the trigger shifter on the tops you will need a negative-shim.

Hi Retrodirect, by negative shim I 'm guessing you mean the bars are too fat? I measured the width of the bar wear you would normally put the bar tape and I'm pretty sure that it is more narrow by about 2mm, I was going to put it there. Coastkid- I'm pretty sure that the Day One Alfine uses Versa's- with disc brakes. Unfortunately I don't think they would work the v-brakes I've got, ad can't afford to upgrade the brakes as well!! 🙂

Hey supersessions 9-2, those J-Tek levers look great. Was considering getting the 11 speed Alfine tho, but will def investigate further...

well you could use the versa shifters with cable disc brakes or a travel agent device or whatever they call it to increase the brake lever pull or do as I did, just bungalow the shifter on the tops of the drop bars, not the most elegant way but its the cheapest... Saying that versa shifters are in the on-one sale for £100

Hi swampi, what do you mean by "bungalow-ing" the shifter? cynic-al, they are v-brakes.
