Hey, I've just bought a bike with XT 770 shifters, When changing gear it changes backwards as in the thumb lever you'd push in to go to your lower gears this shifter it goes in to higher gears and same for the back lever you'd pull it towards you to go into higher gears but it changes in to the lower. Is this normal on xt 770 shifters? Hope thismakes sence. Any help would be great. Rob

Rapid rise rear mech?

Edit, sounds right actually, front, the thumb shifter (under the bars) goes to a bigger chainring. Rear shifter the thumbshifter goes to a bigger sprocket?

Oh I don't know I'm afraid how do I tell?

Edit: the front is as I'd say normal thumb shifter goes into bigger sprocket, rear silver thumb lever goes into smaller "higher gear" sprocket on cassette when normally goes into bigger sprocket "lower gear". If you get me?

If you loosen the cable on a Rapid Rise - the rear derailler will go to the largest sprocket. On a normal setup, it will go to the smallest.

The difference is in the derailler not the shifter - so if you can't live with it, you just need to swap the derailler for a normal one.

Ah right cool thanks, yeah I could get used to it. What's the reason for rapid rise and any benefits over normal?

I think rapid rise came about with the dual control shifters/brakes.

Hi - I've had a rapid rise rear mech and the problem arises if you ride 2 bikes - one with conventional & one with rapid rise - as you are forever chasing up & down with the gears trying to find the right one!

The advantage is if your rear gear cable breaks the default position for the chain is in the easiiest gear. This is the same as the front mech.

But its really what you are use to...
