[#4130801]

Next week 7 of us are off for 4 days ride round mid wales.

Part of this takes us through an area marked on the OS map as "Danger Zone"

On closer inspection this turns out to be Sennybridge Military Firing Range which is closed off via barriers, lights and flags when live ammo is flying.

Long shot I know but does anyone know if it's possible to find out in advance when access is open / when it's best to find an alternative route ?

Did some work on the ranges a few years back. IIRC they open up the PROWs once per year to keep them legal

However you will be able to transit through on PROW which are open all year round. Stay on the road, beware of the moors!

Pants,

Does that mean anything that is on the OS map as a track, unmade road is OK ? There is also a small bit of bridlepath on our route.

Without looking at a MoD map against a OS unsure but will have a look later, but most should be OK from past experience as alot is used for Dry Training as well.

No. There are lots of tracks that are military. Even some RoW are closed or have temporary closures.
Having said that if nothing is going on I am sure that they are used.

The Flags are up at the entrance to the ranges and barriers to stop you going onto the Range, which are L and R of the main access route up at the J Ranges which are static ranges you'll be fine, Just don't cross a barrier and you'll be fine.

Wouldn't want to ride on the inside of the circular road as that is where they fire live ammunition, outside that it is blanks. Be an extreme I was just pedalling along the bridleway when.....................

All of the above is good advice. Try here for specific advice for your actual route and planned dates.

Thanks to everyone for the info, all of which led me to speak to the Major controlling the whole training area.

Turns out to be a keen mountain biker and was really helpful, end result is that having gone over the grid references of our route we are OK to proceed.
