Anyone know what this extra slot was used for ?
(old XT M751 shifter)

I seem to recall it was actually to do with a bar-end-mounted satellite shifter that allowed you to change gear without moving your hands from the bar-ends.

That could be a really useful set up for touring riding with h bars or similar
