My LBS had a demo day with Trek & Scott. I went along for the Trek Fuel Ex / Remedy, but rode a Genius while I waited. The Trek left me feeling fairly meh (did all the things I dislike about my old 5, so pointless 'upgrade'). The Genius, on the other hand, blew me away and had me planning a purchase.
I generally prefer to ride hardtail for the zero bob, instant acceleration and feeling the trail. I seen to be a lot faster on the hardtail too, compared to the group I ride with, not just in my head. Something to push against, rather than compressing suspension and carrying excess weight. On trails where I don't have the skills/balls/bike/fitness to cope on the hardtail, that's where I enjoy the 5. But climbing and trails where you need to pedal to make them fast / fun just feel laboured / slow on the 5. The Genius was a rocket ship compared. On the fairly tame tracks for the demo (a bit like a trail centre), it flew in the mid setting, locked out I could get out of the saddle and pump hard. It encouraged me to ride flat out; the speed had me grinning and was addictive. Unfortunately, there was no where to really test the 6 inch setting, plus without getting the cockpit properly set up for me / some real trail time, I was over cautious on some of the jumps I did know in the area.
Any thoughts from long-term users appreciated. Once the new gloss has worn off, would I still love the Genius?
Maybe getting a remote CTD and a decent tune would sort my 5 and save a big wad of cash in the process?
Current 5 is a 2005 frame, with up to date components and CTD evo (which I am unimpressed with, even with the largest volume reducer installed - needs replacing or tuning properly). 150mm forks and an angled headset give me a 67 degree head angle.
Haven't seen a geometry chart for the Genius yet. If I did go for it, I would probably wait for 2016 model and the Fox 34's instead of 32's. Cheers
Awesome bike of which i have one for sale in a medium should you be interested, serch scott genius on here & you'll find my ad.
Cheers Luke.
I've ridden the genius platform since 2006 (thanks Scott)
I'm a huge fan and 2014 was the first year I'd ditched my Spark as a race bike and settled on just having a Genius.
I'm running my current bike with 34's just for that extra piece of mind when things get 'BC' steep and tech, but will throw a pair of 32's and lighter tyres on for the big race day.
I tended to run the bike in TC (mid) with DT's rear shocks equipped bikes almost all the time, but I'm tending towards fully open now for faster techy descents just for the fun factor.
What do you know about 2016MY? The bike isn't likely due a refresh yet as its only mid cycle, but you might be right that Scott will spec the upper model versions with the 34 IF Fox launch the 34 rad program fork for 2016. Sea Otter will confirm that, but the 34 27.5+ fork would suggest they will.
Just got a Genius LT Tuned, great bike.
What do you know about 2016MY?
I am just going by their website: 650b versions have 34's. Assumed these were the coming model, as different from this year's (which they were discounting)? Forgot to mention 650b, not 29er. (I'm in Aus, if that makes a difference).

Sorry that's an old webpage. No idea what's happening for 2016 models.
