I'm getting a new (2nd hand) car and I like the VW scirocco 2.0tdi 170 (or maybe 2.0T petrol) and the BMW 1 series coupe 120d. Test driven both, but can't decide. Price is very similar too.
Anyone out there have any experience of those and can talk about using them to carry bikes.
Awkward boot in the scirocco.
Lovely looking car mind.
Not as awkward as the boot on a 1 series coupe
I've had a dsg 2.0t gt scirocco for 3 years. It's been a very good and reliable car.
The vw dealers I've used have also been spot on and not charged the earth.
I still don't like dsg but the just personal preference.
The bmw diesel engine is a better init in my opinion but the car it's attached to isn't quite a nice a package as the vw.
Having said hat, if you can get the funds for a 123d its a very good car and I'd have one over either of the others.
Just get the Golf same car more practical and cheaper
Or if you want a car that's half decent to drive, then get the BMW
I'd go with the 1 series coupe. Much nicer to drive if you want to push on shall we say I failed in my search and "had" to go with a 3 series coupe. Just pay attention to spec as some options add significant value to the car based on parkers.
Think your going to be limited to roof carrying if you want to go anywhere with a mate and bikes. Saying that this going to be the case with any saloon derived/styled 2dr coupe rather than a hatchback derived 3dr with a low roofline.
I had the scirocco tdi 170 for 3 years. If it wasn't a company car I would say i wouldn't part with 28k for it, quite plastic inside. Lovely drive though and great torque. It was a 2010 plate and there was a known fault on the rear wheel alignment where after about 20k miles it sounded like the bearings in the wheels had gone, turned out to be uneven tyre wear and nothing could be done except swap the tyres, since it was a company car I didn't care but you might if you're paying. Turbo problems after about 18 months too. Apart from that it covered 80k in 3 years with no other issues.
I had no issues getting bikes in the back either. Wheels off its no problem.
1 series coupe is effectively a two seater as the back seat is hard to get into and there's not a lot of room and to carry a bike it will be on the roof or on the boot lid at least you get a partially dismantled bike in a scirocco
Bmw for me 🙂
I'm also after a Scirocco 170/GT and I already tossed off the 1 series as its a bit of a wet squib really Imo
You can get some great scirocco's for around £10k about 5 years old. Gonna do more research but Think that's for me
No scirocco experience but love my 123d coupe. The 2.0 litre 204bhp unit is legendary (twin turbo in 123d as opposed to single in 120d) Very torquey with great upper end acceleration and superb B road handling thanks to the 50:50 weight distribution but not advised for city/speed bump heavy use....crashy ride on the m sport suspension with 18inch rims and standard run flats (although 17s are an option and apparently not as bad) Lots of owners recommend a switch to non runflats to reduce this. I run a set of 2nd hand 17 inch rims with non run flat winter tyres and its definitely makes a difference for town use ride comfort. But the 18's look the business and of course aesthetics are far more important?! I'm lining up some non runflats for my 18's next tyre swap out.
Budgeting for some winter rims and tyres is advised but depends on your use/location....a no brainier further north?
Bike with front off fits easily in boot.....surprisingly spacious with rear seats dropped flat although bit tight for two thanks to height clearance ....roof carrying for a second bike best. 120d gearing apparently better suited to motorway long hauls as ratios give better fuel economy/lower revs in 6th.
Down sides? Well budget also for third party security upgrade. Mine was stolen in London just before Christmas by some friendly Lithuanians. Without the keys. In 2.5 minutes. Luckily for me they were being tracked by a police sting operation and I got it back. Unlike 100's of others of BMW's that disappeared last year along with other makes with keyless fob ignition tech. Key cloning is a doddle and all the necessary kit is on eBay for £20.00. Along with readily available tutorials apparently. It's not just new models that are going. Mine is of a vintage where the parts are in increasing demand and the police said it was worth 4x it's value in parts. BMW claim software updates have resolved this issue but that is a complete farce. Effective until hacked within a day or two. So keep that in mind
And the other biggy.....n47 engine timing chain issues. BMW's maintenance free alternative to a cam belt, except that a design fault is some earlier models leads to possible early wear and snapping. An engine out 4-5 grand fix for pre 2010 models (specifics available online). Another one in denial land for BMW and lots of noise on the Internet but real world prevalence is unclear. General thinking seems to be check service history carefully and change oil every 10k as opposed to fleet orientated 20k suggestions. And switch off stop/start tech as this apparently is high load on chain. I opted for extended BMW warranty for piece of mind and will sell on with that too to hopefully mitigate any resale issues.
So.....that's probably shoved you firmly into the VW camp! Despite these issues, I wouldn't swap mine.....the pleasure of driving it wins out for now at least and there are perfectly workable solutions as mentioned for the two key problems.
Had exactly the same choice and went scirocco myself. Much nicer cabin sold it for me, lovely place to be sat imho. Downside is that high boot lip as it's easy to catch a pedal on there... Wheels off I can get two bikes in with the back seats flat.
Thanks for the replies, tbh I'm leaning towards the scirocco. Off to drive the 2.0tsi petrol today to see if it tempts me away from the diesel 170.
Have a golf GT currently. Bored of it.
Golf.
Edit: ah if bored with it why bother with a scirocco?
1 series is a far better car, RWD too!
I had a 09 2.0 Tsi
really enjoyed it (oddly felt this more when it went back!)
Did about 60k in it for work and in some ways it is too good (very flat torque spread so fast but does not have that obvious turbo slug of speed of older turbo cars).
Handy enough with the seats down.
I now have a 320d touring and find this a little boring to drive in comparison (although cheaper to run -50mpg vs 30 something in the scirocco)
If you can stomach the petrol cost / don't do too many miles I would go Scirocco!
VW simply because it's a looker where as the BMW is hideous.
1 series all the way because rear wheel drive > front wheel drive
What you can't do on your test drive 🙂

Just driven a 2.0tsi and it was a quality drive. I think the only sticking point would be the fuel economy of having a 200+ bhp petrol car.
Eh? Bored of a Golf, so you want to buy a more expensive less practical Golf?
Does it have to be the 1 coupe? Got the 125d hatch and its a sensational car. So practical too. Seats fold completely flat in back so you've essentially got a van. Took it to France loaded up, but also swallows up a hard case bike box when I'm going to the airport. 45mpg average and 0-60 in a blip over 6 seconds. Love it, and the looks grow on me more every time I look at it.
Not much to add that hasn't already been said.
But I could get two large 29ers in the back with wheels off, enough kit for a weekend race and still have enough room up front for two lanky lads to travel in comfort.
Recently sold our Rocco after 4 trouble free years. Slightly uneven tyre wear, but nothing to worry about.
You can easily get a 29er in the back with front wheel off. Two bikes will go with front wheels off too. Slightly fiddly to fit a bike between the wheel arches, but not a huge headache.
We discounted the 1 series coupe as it looked too impractical. Rocco handled well and our 140 TDI easily did 50mpg. I'd have another if we didn't need 5 doors now.
I know the Scirocco is based on the Golf but is it really an identical drive? VW have done nothing at all to the springs, setup, kit or interior design? The lower body makes no difference?
Not enough to make it as good as the bmw... 😀
I know the Scirocco is based on the Golf but is it really an identical drive?
pretty much.
Interior is different, exterior is different, driving experience is largely the same
Based on a golf but many different parts. The rear is the wider unit from the Passat.
It doesn't drive like a golf - I've had both.
Always seemed to be a bit like people showing how clever they are by saying an Ibiza is the same as a Polo. They might be based on the same chassis but they are set up differently and are a bit different. And people saying a Jag is just a fancy Mondeo. Given how good Mondeos are an upgraded one seems like a fine idea.
Likewise a dropped tweaked Golf with a nicer body. Seems good to me. I want one 🙂
The BMW "bread vans" go for stupid money - esp the M£s. A real Nuerburgring cat ...
I has one of the the old siroccos, and my father had on of the mark 1s, I loved the Corrado. But the current sirocco leaves me cold. I think its is a very ugly motor ...
BMW - rear wheel drive. If you know how to drive one, they will always feel the best ....
Lower and wider than the Golf so physics helps it rails bends well. Mk7 Golf might be better, but the Scirocco was better than a Golf at the time it came out.
It probably isn't fun in a rear wheel drive way, but I found it safe but enjoyable on twisty roads. I was put off by the rwd BMW as Mrs P drives to work outside Edinburgh slightly before rush hour in winter. Depends on your priority.
4 years ago, the Scirocco was a no brainer for us - I prerferred the added exclusivity over the common as muck golf. It would be a tougher choice now.
I've had a scirocco 2.0Tsi for a couple of years now, it's been flawless and is a little over 70k miles. Love the DSG in mine. It's just about as powerful as I'd want a FWD car in the UK to be too.
Lovely to drive and well specced. DCC makes for as engaging or comfortable rise as you want. Had mine on the market for a couple of months, as I want an estate, but decided to keep it for now as I never got any decent offers and I'm not too heartbroken about that at all.
I prefer the way mine drives with 225/45/17 winter tyres to the standard 235s/40/18
DSG due oil change every 40k. They'll take a roof rack too if you don't want bikes in the back.
35mpg b-road commute, can get up to 44 outside rush hour.
Having owned a golf and driven the scirocco, they feel quite different.
We had a 123d hatch on the pool car fleet for a while. Can't really comment on its dynamics as all cars feel the same to me, but by jings it accelerated quickly!
Got a 2.0tsi scirocco GT in black. Collecting it on Saturday.
Excellent choice! Having owned both, I can confirm that the scirocco is a far superior package. You won't be disappointed!
I bought a Scirocco R just over 12 months ago. Lovin it! Absolutely lovin it! Great performance and not too bad on fuel. Easy swallows a fatbike too.

On and on
Do you have the derv with a DSG? I had an A3 with it and it didn't suit the engine, or for the way I wanted to drive anyway. Got the DSG petrol in my leon and love it.
I have a 123D coupe and its been spot on. I have just ordered a 125D hatchback, mainly as it will be easier to get stuff in the back of. Cannot fault the BMW though, nicer than my old A3 and faster too.
