[#4481115]

I've just switched from an iPhone to an android phone, and am wondering what the best app is for GPS linked off-line maps.

On the iPhone I used "multiplans", and used my work A0 scanner to scan in all of my local OS mapswhich works absolutely brilliantly - no waiting for maps to load, no reliance on a data connection etc. I'm sure that there's an equivalent Android app, but I can't find it in amongst all the other nonesense on the Android app store

Any help / suggestions?

Is that legal?

Oruxmaps and get a version of mobac 1.8 - mobile atlas creator. It can use multimap's OS maps and create your maps for you. You then upload to phone and point Oruxmaps to it...job done.

Maverick for Android, use data/wireless to preload the map areas you need which are then available offline. And its free

Thanks, I'll check them out. I think that the multimaps approach is legal as it's just using my own maps whicb I've paid for so should be OK

I use a Trimble outdoors app, you can plan the route then download them onto your phone and it just uses GPS so data isn't required

Here's what it has written at the bottom of all my OS Maps

Crown Copyright XXXX
Reproduction in whole or in part by any means is prohibited
without the prior consent of the Ordnance Survey

(my emphasis)

Did you get prior consent of the OS? If so, I apologise.

What's more crazy is that the OS is funded by us, the tax payers and yet they charge so much for access to "our" data.

Mark,
Look into mm tracker app. It reads .qct files (scanned / digitized os maps). You will need software to convert the scan to this format and reference the grid but the app works.

(a) I bought software from a company and mapping (Anquet) that licenses the data from the OS and therefore has the right to let me make A4 copies.

(b) I signed up for the OS getamap service (£20pa) which also lets me make copies (both 1:50k and 1:25k)

I think Custom Maps should do what you want (not that you're allowed, as noted, to do what you want -- but it has other uses).

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.custommapsapp.android&feature=also_installed

That said, many other mapping apps will allow you to generate offline maps from various data sources, both free and proprietary, either in-app or via Mobac or both. My personal favourite is MyTrails.

Thanks for the reccomendations - I'll explore them and get one installed.
Getamap looks like an ideal, thanks for the heads up on that - finally access to OS map data in a sensibly priced format, great for travels...

It's not that crazy. You also don't have access to all sorts of other publicly funded data sets, and you don't get to have a go on a publicly funded fighter plane or get free DVDs from the BBC... and so on.
