Can anyone recommend anything near Laggan? Staying up that way fairly soon and looking for nearby rides in addition to the trail centre. May well head to Aviemore, but it would be nice to have something a bit closer.

And - dare I ask - are there any good darkside routes too?

cheers!

I don't have a map infront of me, but there are a number of routes you can do around and over the shoulders of Ben Alder. They're pretty well known, but not that common- most routes will involve some carrying, and depending on how soon 'fairly soon' is, there may be problems with some snow- check http://saismeagaidh.blogspot.com/ and http://www.mwis.org.uk/forecast.php?area=3 for a start. First time I went round Laggan after the man-made stuff opened I did a nice route that started and ended at the centre, and looped round between Dalwhinnie, Loch Ericht and Loch Laggan- if you have the OS it shoudln't be too tricky to figure something out. Fairly remote on the whole though, so don't underestimate it.

And obviously the Corrieyairack (sp?) is a 'classic'- it's worth doing if you haven't before.

Have a look in Kenny Wilson's book. Route No.24 is ideal for you. Starting at Moy and heading out to Loch Pattack and back via the numerous tracks. As suggested above a look at the OS map will give plenty of clues. Just don't underestimate the terrain and weather!

Have fun.
