I'm going on a spur of the moment tour and would be interested to know if anyone has any particularly beautiful/interesting riding suggestions for crossing the Dales. The most obvious route is the A65 which I'll use if there's a problem, but would rather avoid this.

Stipulation is it has to be kept sub 80 miles due to time restraints- I've got to finish in Oxenholme by 3.30pm.

You could go via the Trough of Bowland/Lancaster/Lune Valley (Arkholme/Kellets side is a quieter, nicer road)

Pennine Cycleway waymarked and door to door.

Otherwise - Halifax over Oxenhope Moor to Oxenhope then west over to Laneshaw bridge nr Colne. North over Elslack Moor to Elslack, Broughton and then into Gargrave. Upto Airton then over the moor to Settle. Out through Giggleswick then minor road south of the river (opp side of valley to B6480) to Wray. From there Hornby then Gressingham and into Arnside by which ever minor road you fancy.

Or at Laneshaw Bridge head west, to Chatburn then Slaidburn and over towards High Bentham. Joins the giggleswick to wray minor road above. Another variation - Chatburn, through Gisburn Forest and over bowland knotts. Head west at Keasden.

These are all variations on a route I was working out to get from Coniston to Hull
