Right, I'm selling my huge bomber 66 forks as they are an overkill for me and want some simple RS domain coils. So bear with me here: now, from what i have read there are the 302 which are pretty bad and the 318 which are great, having the mission control damping and whatnot. I can't find any 318 cheap with a 1 1/8 steerer but plenty of 302, so my thought was this: buy 302 with 1 1/8 and 318 taper or 1.5 and simply swap the cartridges round then sell on the 302 with the 1.5 or taper steerer for what i paid for them in the first place (they'll get a service in the process so that shouldn't be a problem). Can it be done? or will it all backfire and will i end up throwing away 2 pairs of forks?
Cheers

yes you can. I bought a MoCo damper separately and slotted it straight in.
the damper separately is quite expensive at about £70 and you have to buy the adjustment knob too for about £20 so your idea may work out well price wise so long as you can get close to original price on the 302.
Personally I didn't find the damper to help much and used it more like a lock out with it fully open or fully closed only closing it when I felt I should use something I spent a lot of money on.
So you could just get the 302 and spend the rest getting the right spring weight (another mine field as RS weight chart may, may not be right) and see how you go. U turn is a great feature though and was more use than the MoCo.

No risk of stanchion/bushing interface not working out? ie too tight or loose due to wear and different years having different tolerances?

Not as far as I'm aware. If you're talking about the main bushes they are in the lower legs and slide over the outside of the stanchion whereas the damper works on the inside of the stanchion. The inside of the stanchion is shared with the rebound damper piston but that does not travel as high as the compression damper. Also RS did not change anything from 2006 to 2012 I can't vouch for 2013 on but I doubt they did anything apart from change the stickers.

OP, where have you found cheap, taper steerer Domains? I see Rose have got motion control 1.5s for 279 Euros but I'm after taper or 1 1/8. I'm not so fussed about the damping though, 302s will probably suffice.

Conker's right- The damper isn't much use. I threw one at a R (302) and after many, many hours of riding and tinkering with shim configuring I found I preferred the fork without the MoCo and oil level 105mm from top. My 2 cents

I have a 302 and I like it fine as it is. I'm not one to tinker with fork settings so you may be lukcy like me and like it straight out of the box.
