[#4034076]

I fitted a new pair of shifters last week (105 5700), new chain, cassette and rear mech and, of course, all cables. The front mech was Ultegra so I left that alone.

Anyway, I've got a couple of issues:

1, The rear shifter seems to stick a little. Occasionally it takes two presses (and consequently jumps two gears). I was VERY careful to get no kinks in the cable and everything is brand new.

2, The front shifter takes a hard push to get across. It didn't with the Tiagra shifter I replaced and, as I said, it's the same mech. Could this be the same problem as above.

Not had this on MTB before. Any ideas?

Sounds like a cable issue to me. What cables did you use?

LBS sorted me with cable and outers. Ran freely before I connected everything up.

It should be bob on straight out of the box.

Avoid plastic ferrules as they compress under shifts.
Are the jockey wheels fouling the cassette? Adjust if they are too close.
The final loop of outer to the rear mech, is it big enough. If it's too tight it'll always shift like a pig.
I'd loosen the cable
Make sure the mech is trimmed with the cassette.
Screw the rear adjuster in, then back off a few turns.
Pull cable through, pull taught but not to stiff. Tighten the bolt and try again.

For the front mech. Undo the cable and move the mech by hand to make sure it travels across the rings.
Pull the cable taught, making sure the mech doesn't move at the same time. Don't pull the cable super tight. See how that goes.

sure you've got the cable clamped in the right places ?

outer long enough for no sharp corners ?

definitely threaded right through the STIs ?

matched 10sp (or both 9sp) mech and cassette ?

what chain are you using - "proper" one with cutaways to help it shift ?

(not a shimano 10sp one but back-to-front ? ( apparently makes a diff)

Just sounds like your mech positions aren't quite right.

Glenh - If it was just the rear I'd not disagree. The front mech hasn't moved a mm though so it's somewhere between there and the shifter.

5700 supposedly uses a different front pull ratio compared to earlier stuff (6700 and earlier), although I'd be surprised if it causes a significant problem. No idea on the rear problem, other than making sure the loop is nice and long.
