Hello!

Can anyone offer any advice on road cycling in Corsica?

I'm going on holiday in September to porto vecchio and planning on renting a bike whilst I'm there.

Any hints, tips or general suggestions would be appreciated.

In particular around routes, cafes and "must do" climbs.

If you're feeling energetic then Col de Vergio, climb on up to Piana (Callanches pink rock), Cap Corse is nice scenic coastal road.
Spalunka? Gorge is great ride.

Trying to remember route we took 5 years or so ago now.

Oh and fit a triple or a bigger cassette as you'll need it, and the road conditions ain't great but made up for by stunning scenery almost everywhere.
Definitely will go back at some point.

Look up Ronnie Chard on strava, he's out there at the moment been touring around for the last two weeks. It looks amazing for road biking I'm sure he'd be glad to help.

I go there once or twice a year. You will be fine riding anywhere to be honest. From Porto you can go North, inland up into the mountains on small windy roads, head to Zonza for a late lunch then up to the col and back down on the East side of the Island then a flattish ride back to Porto. Or head West for a coast ride round towards say Propriano on the coast, or a bit inland to Sartene for lunch and back.

Its all very wiggly and very hilly. The only flat bit is the narrow strip between the mountains and the East coast. Otherwise you will be in granny gear climbing or descending.

Roads are small, but very little traffic. They all respect bike riders, but be careful the locals drive like they stole the cars. There are no paths or cycle routes, but pretty empty roads. No pot holes, but some of the mountain passes are rough. You get snow and ice at the top. Should be fine in Sept though. But expect a big temp drop once you are at the top of the mountains.

Pay a visit to Bonnifacio - simply amazing and not far from Porto. Best marina in the Med and incredible hilltop town.

Have you sorted bike hire ? There is little choice and few shops, so make sure you get that sorted. Or bring your own. Bring spares, there are no shops (of so few I've never seen them)

September is a good time to go, you miss the August holiday crowds and the heat. Food is great, views are stunning. Best place I've ever been. The local beer is nice.

When you are there buy some IGN walking maps from the newsagents and you will be fine. There are a lot of small dirt tracks as well as roads. Some will be fine to cycle on and can lead from the coast down to some stunning coves and bays on the coast.

From Porto you can enjoy a typical Corsican holiday without riding too far. Bonnifacio, Sartene, Zonza, Propriano - that sort of area is fine. You don't need to go further. Its a small place and the top of the island is not much different to the bottom.

Distances can be deceiving as its very hilly and very wiggle.

You will love it.

I was there the year the tour was there (stages 1-3 in 2013?) though sadly not with bikes, stayed just north of PV. The Col de Bavella is a long, epic climb from Solenzara with fantastic scenery and a warp speed descent into Zonza - saw lots of cyclists having a go. Corsica went mad for the TdF, it seemed to me that the roads on the itinerary had been carefully manicured (oh, for the same to happen here!) and would be a joy to ride. And Bonifacio is a jewel. You will love it.

The roads were freshly redone for the tour - see if you can re-ride some of the stages. Simply stunning views, climbs and descents.
