Fancy having a go this coming season. I have some nice bor hubs lying about so what rim would you recommend?
Tub or clincher?
Light Bicycle or FarSports tubs - if it's a race wheel set no point messing with clinchers!
Undecided on tubs or not. I've never used tubs before. It depends if I can find a rim at a good price. I'll have a super heavy clincher training wheel set so it will only be for races or days when I want a fast blast.
Are LB still the go to rim even with the £ making them more expensive?
I raced on(successfully) for 2 years and still use them
Stans Iron cross rims on hope evo hubs set up tubeless and had maybe one burping incident in all that time 😀
I get tubs are what a lot of folks use but i couldn't be arsed with the faff 😕
Ive run iron cross and crests tubeless and they work very well.
crest tubeless on my frankencross (26"). I'd run Iron Cross 700c tubeless. All the positives of tubs with less pfaff and expense. What's not to like?
Do it properly and run tubs - they're the one thing on a CX bike that will transform performance. A waste of nice hubs otherwise!
if you need the wheels for both training and racing then get rim. but if you have the luxury of a race only wheelset then tubs will be the biggest upgrade by FAR. if you glue them correctly they will be fantastic.
check out cx junkies blog for glueing techniques.
I've used a classic set up for a few years without issue. mavic reflex / 105 hubs. cheapish and reliable. merlin have cheap tub wheelsets not sure on quality though.
Those Merlin tub wheelsets are amazing for the money. Glued a couple of pairs up for a mate last season, and they survived well
