[Closed] Ridiculous Tyre Choices!

[#10123540]

So I spent about 45 minutes last night trying to suss out my tyres for the Ard race this weekend... rear is sorted. Nice DD Aggressor, rolls well enough, burly enough, tick, done.

Bloody front tyre... I've been running a 2.5" Minion DHF (before they were called the WT on 29ers), super sticky maxx gripp compound and big ole knobblies but on a relatively narrow rim the corner knobs are too banked over and ever since finding that out, I've been washing out the front (stupid mind tricks!). Swapped over to a DD Minion DHRII as it's narrower so better profile, but then knobblies are much smaller and it's not the super sticky. Spend 45 minutes swapping tyres over, looking at treads, swapping them back, spilling out sealant, look again, change mind, lose more sealant, get annoyed, swap tyers back, leave frustrated.

Does anyone else spend this much bloody time worrying about tyre choice?!

Not at all, I'm nowhere near good enough to get to my tyres' limits!

Nope, I pick an all round dry-ish conditions tyre* and stick with it for 6 months, then I pick a slightly wetter all round tyre for the other 6.

Not racing though so time spent maintaining bikes is deducted from my riding time, no amount of TLA's on a tyre sidewall is going to give me back that time on a ride!

*this summer its conti race king 2.2, annoyingly not tubeless and way too porous to do a ghetto job on them!

Learn to ride what you have. Generally I ride a tyre to destruction.

I would like to experiment with different tyres but the price of them combined with what you've described tells me otherwise.
Perhaps I will do as the poster above and swap for winter/summer.

Serial tyre swapper. I have 3 wheelsets shared between two bikes so I can swap around as the mood takes me without the tubeless tyre swapping hassle, most of the time, unless I want to use a tyre that isn't mounted up or is on wrong wheel (F<>R). For Ard Rock I'll run the Butcher for practice and if I feel like I need more grip (or it rains) will put the Mary on for race day. Hopefully that will get me into the top 90%.

Edit: But I'm not 100% comfortable with my rear choice. I think a DD Aggressor is a good option, I generally run an EXO Aggressor. However for toughness I have gone for a tough fast Trail Boss, which has smaller side knobs than I'm used to. I'm sure it'll be fine, but..... you know, over thinking.

Come on, it's an #enduro at least take it a bit sensibly.

What you really want is a nice set of Dugast Pipisquallos. 33mm tub natch.

I put a new dhf and dhr are on yesterday for Ard Rock. Got them in and inflated then noticed the Maxxis logos weren’t lining up with the rim decals so had to start again to line them up.

Other than that never worry about tyres

2.6 Forekaster has been brilliant for me so far.

Yeah sorry i should be more helpful. 2.5 minion dhf front all year, maybe shorty in exceptional gloop.  Dhr rear all year except for #heatwaveaggedon when i use an aggressor 2.3. So like 2 swaps a year max.

Good luck and hope you win!

Well not you've jinxed it! I reckon a nice chunky 2.5 DHF would be perfect if I had wider rims but those corner knobs are just pointing so horizontal I can never get on em properly!

How narrow are your rims? They work well on 25.5mm Flow EX at about 25psi.

genuine question to the OP... are you planning/hoping to be in the top 10%ish of riders?

because if not, then just go and have some fun with the tyres that are on... shirley to goodness..

*shakes head* - *grumbles about "kids today"*

I'm hoping to keep out of the bottom 10%. But more crucially I need to beat my mates, and that will be tight racing with seconds making the difference, rather than the minutes we'll be behind Danny Hart.
