last used SPDs 17 years ago, stopped riding MTB for a bit and now want to give them a go again. Any decent bargains on shoes around? I ride 'all mountain' and currently use some teva mid tops as I like the protection. Planning on smashing some climbs with them so hoping I'll see a difference...?

Ta!

In normal STW fashion..

I've got, and rate very highly, the mavic alpine XL. Stiff sole, good protection.

My brother was really against SPDs until he tried them and then smashed all his Strava records up hills. I certainly see gains on SPDs compared to not using them.

No idea on the shoes, just pop to a good shop and try some on for comfort.

Yep, for the shoes pop into a decent shop and try some on, then order them online for cheaper...

Leave a digestive behind to be nice though.

just tried spd's again for the 1st time in 5 years.
worn them for the last week touring, made my feet, ankles and legs hurt.
just ordered some 5-10 flat shoes again......spd's dont fit me now i reckon.

New shimano 'enduro' are nice, mavics do look beauty but can't see them lasting long or dry in British winter.

Interestingly i've gone back onto flats and haven't noticed a difference going up but im faster going down.

Didn't mind spds at all but there is that confidence thing. Also got sick of sticking my spd shoes on for quick park rides with my children.

tried spd's for a good few years, made me an even crapper rider, since I went back to flats my riding skills (allegedly) and the Fun element has returned, IMO their not for everybody.

I love flat pedals and still plan on using them. However I'd like to give Spds a go again particularly on longer days in the saddle. So was after some recommendations for shoes really...
