Recommendations for fork cargo mounts and bags (bikepacking)

Hi,

I've just swopped my carbon forks for the trek 1120 fork with the 3 bolts on each side of the fork.

I'm probably going to just run water bottle cages to start with.

Just wondering what other people are using, any recommendations to use? The Blackburn cages look good and a decent price but slightly heavier than I want at 126g each.

There's also the cheaper copies on ebay. Not sure about the bags but the cages look good.

Just wondering how it effects the steering and if you catch the bags a lot.

I'd appreciate pictures of your set up too.

Thanks

I bought a pair of fork cages & bags from Planet X, they worked fine but the problem was that I caught them on no end of stuff when offroad and they'd 'flick' the bars awkwardly.

I have a pair of the Blackburn cargo cages on my fat bike forks using only two bolts on to some DrJon mounts, have carried a decathlon camping chair on one side and a litre of water in the other side.

Generally left them on and knocked then a times and snagged on undergrowth and never had a problem.

I like that the straps included have a rubberised coating on the inside helping grip what ever it is holding and the ladder buckle keeping things secure and never had them come loose.

Salsa cage one side, PX cage (and bag) the other. Both work fine, don't affect handling and I haven't had the snagging issues I'd half expected.

I've got a couple of the PX podsac bags & fork mounts. But, not actually used them yet.
I tried to fit them to my Camino when I first got it, just to see what they were like & the screws supplied with the fork aren't long enough (due to the thick plastic of the PX fork mounts). I need to measure them up & order some slightly longer screws.

I have some salsa anything cages, the plastic ones, got them used. Work well, just carry light things in them.

I had some of the cheap PX podsack bags and cages but found them a bit big (the cages i mean, the bags still get used, if a little heavy). Got some Tailfin fork racks and really rate them. Low profile so permanently stay on the forks now.

@luv2ride did you buy the small or large ones?

They seem to be well designed with the removable bottom part and a lot lighter than the other cages.

Do you use them with voile straps?

I've got a blackburn cage, mounted under the downtube though, my Ti mug filled with gas canister+stove and other cooking gear is big enough to be irritating in a frame bag/bottle mount, but fits perfectly in the space between the spinning cranks.

I'm not wildly keen on fork mounts, mostly because it's already possible to make my bike wildly heavy filling other bags, so more issn't the solution!

@damascus i went for the "small" ones with 3 eyelets rather than 4 (think they also now a "mini" version with two bolt holes?). Use with voile straps, pass the strap though the the slots, behind the fork leg and back out the slot on the other side (then cinch up round the bag or item to be carried). Seems to hold things more tightly than my previous PX set up.

I have the blackburn ones and find them good. I don,t put water in them as its too heavy and will effect the handling. I use them for lighter items.

I have a pair of Topeak adjustable bottle cages on my Big Bro (frame bag uses up all the triangle). I had them lying around and they're not that pretty, but they work well with different size bottles and can be made smaller if not in use. No problems with handling or bottle retention.

Got a pair of blackburn cargo cage v1 (with the two holes) and a pair of bbb stack rack.

Both work well on fork used with lightweight camping chairs, and/or 5L lomo dry bags

I've got the Blackburn cages on mine, drilled an extra hole for the third bolt. Use them with Sea to Summit 5l 'Big River' drybags, but only for lighter stuff - usually my tarp and groundsheet, plus a few other light bits - so they don't affect the handling too much.

Hi, has anyone got any experience of decathlons riverside cages and bags? Just got an email through with them on, new release.

£13.99 and a claimed weight of 96g which is lighter than some but doesn't include straps. But looking at the pictures it kind of looks like something you would see on a roman chariot for taking out people's legs.

Id prefer metal to hard plastic. Might need to go see them in person.

Bags look tough and only 150g claimed weights. (currently out or stock)

I like the loop on the bag that's designed to loop over the cage to keep the bag secure and from slipping.
