Pretty much got the Scandal build sorted in my head now except for the wheels. Can anyone recommend some please.
Looking for something pretty strong but not too heavy. Was thinking about the On-One Reetards are they any good?
Further to a thread I was on yesterday, anyone know if Hope are planning on doing 29er hoops?
Thanks in advance
Yes - I recommend some 29er wheels!
I've got some Halo rims on XT hubs that my LBS built up for me - 3 years ago. Straight and true after 3 years of clumsy riding from me.
I asked Hope several months ago and got a 'we do 26" mountain bike Hoops and we're going to do road Hoops' - they seemed a bit baffled at the possibility of mixing some big rims with a mtb hub.
I also asked Hope a couple of weeks ago and got a resounding NO!
I have the On-One reetards and for the money, (mine were £99 with Nevegals and tubes) you really can't complain. They seem strong, but, they are heavy. My set weighed in bare at around 2.4KG for the pair. I've just ordered a set from Justridingalong. The new Stans ZTR Hubs, DT Comp sokes and Stans Arch rims. Going tubeless with Bonty Mud X's. Back of a fag packet I reckon it will save 2 - 2.5lbs and save it where it counts most. The downside is its going to cost me the thick end of £400 which stings a bit when the rest of the Scandal was so reasonably cheap!
Hopefully delivered next week, so I'll let you know if they make a difference, I hope so 😳
I like these for my geared bike.

especially the mahoosive 30mm Gordo.
Pah.
Wait till I get my hands on a pair of KH 47mm rims. 😉
KH 47mm rims.
do they come with a free uplift?
😉
Chevin have just built me some Bonty Duster rims on ProII hubs. Excellent service from them. I've been running Bonty wheels which have effectively the same rims and have been impressed.
I have Bonty Race Lites on my hardtail and Sun Ringle Charger 20mm on my Big Mama. Happy with both (especially as i picked up both sets as new for a big saving on the classifieds here). CRC were doing some deals on their Sun Ringle 29er sets recently which could be worth a look. The Big Mama reviewed in this months What MTB was running Halo Excite 29ers which they said were very light. Don't know where to get a price for them though?
kris holm's here, very wide and very strong.
but the on ones are standing up to a bit of abuse too, on my most ridden bike.
Halo Freedoms here and can't complain, ok so they are not the lightest wheels out there but then I'm not the lightest of riders. 😳 They seem strong enough given that I'm over 20 stone and don't mince round stuff but plough through it. The only thing i will say is that after 9 months of riding the rear bearings are on their way out but then thats not a big job.
Plan to get some Mavic or Stans rims laced to a set of ProII hubs I've got sitting in the shed once my finances improve 🙄
i am gonna try some halo's on my new 29r build............ 😉
Ton.
The Halo rims aren't very strong mate.
I've got a few of them with quite big flat spots on them.
We build a lot of Hope Pro2/Duster wheels. No problems yet!
I have spoken to Hoop a couple of times in the last few weeks and they assure me that there will be some Hope hoops in 29er format ASAP. Probably using Pro 2 on Stans rims. We already have an order placed......

I'm running mavic 719rims laced on Hope pro2 hubs on my inbred 29er, and you get the rat-a-tat-boom of the hope machine gun freehub for single track slow coaches..
I went with the On-one package including Kenda SB8 and paid a bit more than 99.99 and a bit less than the 149.99 they have them on for today (125 without tyres and tubes).
2 years ago, I couldn't get/build anything comparable for anywhere near the price. They have held up fine. I am on the heavy side so less worried about the grams and more worried about the strength. No issues.
I've always used Mavic rims in 26" format as they're about the strongest out there for their weight, and the same would seem true for 29er rims I'd say... Just built up some Mavic TN719's which are 500g each (I weighed them, sad I know!) which isn't a bad weight for a 19mm inner rim width rim that is decently strong, and as it's a 29er it's obviously gonna be heavier than the equivalent 26" rim.
So I'd suggest some Mavic TN719's on the hubs of your choice, built with some decent double butted spokes...
Sunn Ringle do a range of different width 29er rims that Chain Reaction sell too though, if you wanna give them a look.
Or if you're feeling flush, obviously there's always the lovely Stans rims!

I'm heavier than Ton (yes yes i know the diet is NOT going to plan 😳 ) and I've not managed to flat spot my Freedoms yet, maybe i ride a bit smoother than i thought 😉 😆
[Edit] or more jey than i thought 😕 [/Edit]
i am not gonna try any halo's with my new 29r build then........on stu's advice. 😉
is it the freedom rims you flatend?,dunno how..,yes the old halos were a bit bendy compared with mavics but most folk agree the freedoms are ok,dirt magazine have reviewed them a few times..anyway mine have been fine..
I use the Gordo's too, 35mm wide by the way not 30mm. Running mine on Royce hub on the geared bike, very nice. I was running a King with the same combo but I hated the noise, the Royce did sound more like a Hope except Cliff has come up with a new way of maintaining the hubs in top notch condition; he has created a lubing system much like the CK BB, the axle is drilled to allow the injection of grease through the QR using a plunger system. Means the hub is still fully sealed but you can inject the grease to enable wet seals, silent running and max efficiency, they roll amazingly:) and look beautiful to boot.
