My thinsulate just doesnt cut these icy winds, which go right through and do nothing to protect the ears etc. Was thinking of something like sealskinz but theyre kind of thin.

So, any recommendations 😕

Those old Lowe Alpine Mountain caps FTW.

Foldy ear flaps and windproof.

Montane do a Merino blend outer with a Gore wind stopper inner - I have a few different designs and they are my go-to winter hat.

Surplus arctic hat with the velcro flaps?

They're bloody warm, definite depths of winter stuff, I have inherited one of the £6 UK ones. The Göre Tex one might be better for wet weather.

I should really have specified beanie style... Some of those suggestions ... 😆

Montane do a Merino blend outer with a Gore wind stopper inner

The inner is just the headband. But its a possible. Was thinking something windproof allover, but reasonable tight to the skull. Some of those with flaps just cause the wind to roar past your ears which makes listening out for traffic difficult.

This is more my style, but a bit expensive

Well in which case - I've a Montane combination fleece and wind proof beanie/skull cap that fits under a helmet. It was a couple of quid from mountain-kit.co.uk (Montane outlet). Looks quite 'special' when not under a helmet.

I bought mrs_oab a Pearl Izumi windproof skull cap and that has ear 'extensions' and some windproofing. She finds it a) too sweaty to ride in and b) too special looking to wear...

I have one of these https://www.kangol.com/wool-504-earlap

they do work and most of the time the ear flaps are tucked away in the hat. with the ear flaps down tho it does tend to make you look like a weirdo

I also have a woolen knit beanie that has a thinsulate liner. Its too hot to actually wear unless its arctic conditions. similar to this
https://www.silvermans.co.uk/products/thinsulate-knitted-beanie-hat

These are really good, they have a fleece band around the ears.
