I'm hopefully about to aquire a Cotic Soda, which it could be argued (if you read their sizing guides) will be a touch small for me. I know that this is a frame that needs plenty of seatpost inserted, and I'm a bit concerned that a 410mm Thomson might not quite be long enough.

The bike takes a 31.6 post, so would another option be to use a shim and a narrower post, so that the shim goes far enough in, even if the post doesn't, or will that lead to an expensive breakage too?

I'd be happy with a tough carbon post or alloy, but loooong. What do you other lanky blokes use?

Thomson seems to be the general 'long post' but there are a few longer ones out there but i can't recall them at the moment. Not much help that is it!

The only really long post i also have is a Thudbuster XL which is 450mm but that probably isn't what you're after.

I'd suggest a trawl of CRC and see what turns up?

If a 410mm post isn't long enough, you've bought a size to small!

Blackspire post is longer than the seattube on my ickle nutter bike.

It's not light. WTB Speed-V and Fizzik Gobi saddles are quite tall which can help.

I am a tall chap and run 440mm Thomson on all of my bikes, well within their minimum insert markings.

TBH, if the longest Thomson won't suffice, you really should avoid buying the frame. Thomson is pretty much the default choice for a long, strong post.

Sorry, probably not the news you wanted to hear, but at least it avoids the obvious cost of buying a frame too small.

I agree with Pete, not only that, it will look bloody daft.

Sell bike.
Save up rest.
Buy proper bike.

or

Get stupidly long seatpost.
Ride wrong size bike.
Break something.
Buy proper size bike.

Ta daaaaaaaa................

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BBB-BSP23-Longscraper-Seatpin-Long-Seatpost-31-6-450mm_W0QQitemZ350327612633QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item51912724d9

Not too sure on the quality etc but at that price it's probably worth a punt? BBB are usually reasonably good and it's heavyish but considering the length it's not too bad?

Be very, very careful. The frames are designed for 410mm seatposts maximum, and you need at least 110mm of seatpost in the frame (i.e. 20mm below the top tube). Unless you're very light, I suspect you'll end up breaking the frame or the seatpost or both.

I'm a little under 6'4" with a 35" inside leg. I don't tend to ride with a very high saddle so I guess I might be alright with a thomson 410. I'll check it out before I commit.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

It's the large one, 19". I guess I won't have too many problems with a 410mm post then. It'll help me keep out of the saddle when I'm racing!

Tried it out this evening and a 410 is going to be plenty. Result.
