I'm planning on starting to commute a couple of days a week next year.It's 16 miles each way with a mix of road,canal and farm tracks so I'm thinking a CX bike should be the ideal bike?
I'd also use it for a bit of riding from my front door when I just want a quick spin.
£1000 max
I know nothing about CX/road bikes so looking for recommendations.

If you're quick it looks like you can nab a Boardman cx team from Halfords for £550 (with British Cycling discount)

GT Grade or similar, not as compromised as a cross bike if you end up riding more on the road.
Arkose 4 is a grand now. Love mine (at £1250, at a grand I'd love it more).
Might be an idea to look at the Trek Crossrips which are not true CX bikes but gravel ones work great off road done 800miles on my last years Crossrip LTD.good on road too.
